Self-review: normally translating 2~3000 words aday is the max I can do for a day. But with help of Google translate and revise afterwards, 5000 words a day is possible. I feel it is still a bit slow and a bit over stretching though. My aim today was to complete the translation revision for the preface. But still, it is only half way through. Maybe the first draft always require the most time and efforts to torque, to move around the words like puzzles, to make sure the translation capture the right meaning. And how do reader feel the text? Is it ok to soften the tone a little bit? If "we" appears too many times in a sentence or a paragraph, is it ok to reduce some of the "we" in Mandarin, to improve readibility and to conform to the seemly less "self-centric" convention that is often critiqued in chinese writings? How to percisely iterate the criticality and not to submit to the tendency of hegemonic rhetoric of chinese language? Still a lack of vocabularies and fluency pervade in these translated lines. On top of that, I still feel there is a way to improve the work-flow, to be more focused and to find a more constructive way to communicate/ list out questions I encountered. Round 2: 7:30~11:30PM -formating from preface to 1. Getting started 9/26 Drinking with village elder from early morning, and prepare lunch/ went to church gathering with Mari. 2-4pm - second time revision and highlight from preface/beginning to open publishing (one hour), first time revision of preface/flow of context (three paragraph) @林田山 9/27 A day in the tribe without knowing exactly what to do. Went to the forest trail to see the resistance site for dam construction in the early morning. Taking care of kids, cleaning and cooking with Mari. What is my role in it? There is no answer. After returning to the dorm in the evening and try to focus on translation, my attention drifted to listening to an online talk. It was 張中宜‘s presentation on AI and inclusive finance during Taipei Woman techmaker's forum and Audrey Tang's open office session, espeically on the topics such as using technology to develope carbon finance, to extent the more-than-human dimention of technology and intellegenc draw my attention. How big we can dream is only limited by our imagination. I'm inspired by how they transform local shops or newspaper vendors into financial institution for the female population and the iliterate (with AI vocal instruction and KYC app) by recruiting major players. Night walk from 鳳林 to 萬榮 (one and half hour) and took the last train back. The design of train station don't have a door facing the tribe, only a door facing the high road. An example of how architecture shape us and we are shaped by architecture. Interestingly, amid their aim to seek 100 locally-made teaching packages, the most avid contributor is Taipei First Girls High school teacher 陳怡芬 with more than three dozen course materials. We can say she is the queen of the pack and a programing teaching powerhouse! We now seek to translate the book into Traditional Chinese language, working closely with Taiwanese art and coding communities. The politics of translation has been well-established in general, but what of the specifics of translating a book such as this? Translating Aesthetic Programming opens up a politics of versioning, forking and translation. In summary, the book addresses the cultural and aesthetic dimensions of programming from its insides, as a means to think and act critically, offering an applied and overtly practice-based approach to understanding the importance of programming. Our intention is for readers to also become writers in the sense that they acquire key programming skills in order to read, write and think with, and through, code. We feel that it is important to further explore the intersections of technical and conceptual aspects of code in order to reflect deeply on the pervasiveness of computational culture and its social and political effects — from the language of human-machine languages to abstraction of objects, datafication and recent developments in automated machine intelligence, for example. The book develops discussion of power relations that are still relatively under-acknowledged in technical subjects, concerning class and capitalism, gender and sexuality, as well as race and the legacies of colonialism. ### Translating/Forking Importantly, we do not see this book as a fixed and universal teaching resource, but rather a situated curriculum with the potential for extension and customization with other arts and coding communities. Following the free and open source ethos, we want to open up different possibilities for making “cuts” across the various materials and ideas, and encourage readers to fork a copy and produce their own versions; with different references, examples, for further modification and re-use. With this open invitation, we want to stress that Aesthetic Programming is not only a book, but it is also a computational networked object, distributed across other spaces and temporalities, able to be translated into new contexts and versions. In the forking of Aesthetic Programming, we are curious to consider translation at the various levels of socio-technical operation - recognising the many layers of translation at work when machines interpret instructions in their own terms.
