### 2. Project proposal name/working title*
D&S Careers Year 2: Internships and Summer Experience
### 3. Brief description*
This project, in collaboration with the Turing’s defence and security partners, would pilot an undergraduate internships programme in summer 2024 with the overall aim of increasing participation in data science (DS) careers from people who are ethnic minorities and from lower socio economic backgrounds.
Work has begun on an initial two year pilot project focusing on a summer programme for 16 and 17 year olds and a series of careers talks on defence and security data science roles for undergraduates. REG is already involved in the year 1 activities of organisng the summer school in 2023.
Intern projects will be sourced from the Turing’s Defence and Security programme. REG involvement would be to support the creation of suitable internship projects and support intern training activities.

## Section 2: Relevance*
> Describe how the proposal aligns with the REG project priority criteria (max 300 words for each). Refer to REG [project appraisal criteria](https://github.com/alan-turing-institute/research-engineering-group/wiki/Criteria-for-project-appraisal) for further information.
### 16. Impact*
This project hopes to inspire those currently underrepresented in Defence and Security data science careers to consider these as career options. While the first two years will be small scale, the hope is to increase the scale should the project be renewed for future years. We also hope delivering internships in this area (undergraduate) and summer programmes for school age students will help the Turing learn more about working with groups we haven’t previously and help us build, resources, tools and networks to engage better with these audiences.
### 17. Diversity*
Internships will specifically only be open to those from lower socio-economic backgrounds making diversity a key strand of this project. Interns will supported through a mentorship program and Skills training programme alongside project work. All interns will be competitively paid. The summer experience is targeted at young people from lower socio economic backgrounds and ethnic minority students who are also financially supported.
### 18. Pioneering*
As mentioned above the Turing has had minimal interaction so far with undergraduate students and school age students and this would give us a new opportunity to engage a significant audience for us. We would hope to build on the experiences of the previous Turing Internship programme to seek positive ways to engage. We hope to offer online only internships as well as hybrid options to increase accessibility.
### 19. Openness*
Unfortunately as the exact D&S projects are not yet confirmed we are unable to comment on openness. Where possible we plan to upload curriculum from the Summer Experience to Zenodo to allow it to be re-used.
### 20. Alignment with Turing 2.0*
As this project is rooted in the D&S programme it very much aligns with the Turing 2.0 Grand Challenge of Defence and Security. It also aligns with objective 8 under build skills for the future which lists “Support EDI pilot activities in target sectors aligned with grand challenges to widen participation and increase visibility of careers in data science and AI.” As a key result.
## Section 3: Staff*
### 21. What specific skills should the requested staff possess?*
> Enumerate any required skills beyond generic RSE/DS skills.
Awareness of developing training materials, particularly for an undergraduate audience would be a bonus.
### 22. Preferred level of experience of the requested staff*
