Prototype! :::info The goal of this phase is to define & materialize 3 relevant product proposals according to the subject given. ::: :::danger Your prototype must be a physical object : diagrams, images, drawings and 3D files etc. will not be considered as prototypes. ::: ### Ressources Here is a short list of useful websites and softwares for prototyping things. :::success - [instructables.com](https://www.instructables.com/): A great website with tutorials for (almost) everything - [makezine.com](https://makezine.com/projects/): A well known magazine with tons of cool projects - [thingiverse.com](https://www.thingiverse.com/) The world's largest 3D printing commmunity, with loads of projects - [hackaday.com](https://hackaday.com/): If you are a bit hacker or want to become one, this site is for you! - [wikifab.org](https://wikifab.org/wiki/Accueil): Just like instructables, but *en français* - [Slicer](https://apps.autodesk.com/FUSION/en/Detail/Index?id=8699194120463301363&os=Win64&appLang=en) : A software to convert 3D models (.stl files) into laser-cutted slices, a great tool to build cardboard objects. - [Make a box](https://makeabox.io/) : A website to create boxes that can be laser cutted - [Makercase](http://www.makercase.com/) : Another laser cutted boxes website - [templatemaker.nl](https://www.templatemaker.nl/) : To create quiclky paper objects. - [Sculptris](http://pixologic.com/sculptris/) : A 3D sculpting tool, a fun way to create 3D models for 3D printing or laser cutting. - ... ::: ## Define & prototype 3 proposals ### Proposal n°1 : Landing Net ##### Actors :::warning - FOR WHOM? For kids, children and young teenagers - BY WHO? Basse Adja Nayette Diouf, Emmeline Carrié, Zhao Huacheng, Sarah Castanou, Anna Monmarche - WITH WHOM? Try to involve/ sensibilize other students and children. ::: ##### Context :::warning - WHY? We want to create this prototype in order to sensibilize the young population about the issues/ dangers of water pollution. It is time that it decreases because it is killing marine life and it is not only affecting them but also us humans. If our target start being more conscious and aware about these issues and start using the prototype it will be a total success for us. - WHEN? Spring- Summer (March-July) - WHERE? Beach, they will be able to use the prototype whenever they will go to the beach during the summer for example to clean the ocean. Therefore, these actions will also have an impact on the other people (adults) going to the beach. - ::: ##### Features :::warning - WHAT? two wooden handles, like on a diabolo, with two strings connecting the two handles to a bucket with holes in it that will let water but not waste to pass through - HOW? Define the key actions, clarify the give/get relationships and how the actors connects. ::: ##### Usage scenario Describe use cases Users can access to this prototype through an application or a game that would encourage children to collect as much waste as possible. This is an improved landing net which is practical to use on a boat or over water, less physical than a normal landing net (which is used only with one arm), and more stable for children. : :::warning **Initial context:** ![](https://i.imgur.com/8jSiIzK.jpg) Take the two pieces of wood in your hands ::: :::warning **Action 1:** (![](https://i.imgur.com/nymWc70.jpg) ) Approach and place the plastic jar in the water ::: :::warning **Action 2:** ![](https://i.imgur.com/0HjMgW6.jpg) Exert pressure while backing up and keeping the jar in the water, so the waste will be collected along the way on the beach ::: :::warning **Action 3:** ![](https://i.imgur.com/4KVTqPv.jpg) Carry the container on the water to collect the waste. ::: :::warning **Resolving situation:** ![](https://files.slack.com/files-tmb/TT50JJYG3-F01148NTGNS-596def6ef0/91184837_691866344884856_7856256158099570688_n_720.jpg) Place the plastic container on water so that it will float and collect the waste. ::: ##### Benchmark List concurrents and relative projects and describe how they relate or differentiate to your project :::warning * Regular Landing net, this is a normal landing net, it is linked with our project because we use the same principle which is a prototype that let water to pass but not waste. However, our project is different because it will be customized with homemade products and be less practical than a regular landing net since ours will be more focused on our targets which are children; therefore, it will be suitable for children. * Fishing Net, the link with ours is the net, however, this is only for fishing. Therefore, it is somehow different from ours which is to captivate waste and not fish. * ... ::: ##### Ressources We are expecting existing tutorials that can help you to materialize your proposal. You can search on youtube.com, instructables.com, thingiverse.com, etc. :::warning * Homemade landing net, (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxOniwDZ7Mg), It illustrates how to construct a landing net at home * Homemade Pier/Bridge Landing Net, (https://www.instructables.com/id/Homemade-PierBridge-Landing-Net-Fishing/), It is an example of a fishing net which can inspired us in the construction of our improved landing net * ... ::: *** ##### Prototype description :::danger Your prototype must be **a physical object** : images, drawings, diagrams and 3D files will not be considered as prototypes. ::: Describe here the materials and tools you've used to build your prototype. You can use rough materials, such as paper, cardboard, clay, lego or repurpose existing objects. :::warning - Two wooden straws with holes - A drilled plastic pot - Large Metal Screw - Orange Tape ::: ##### Prototype pictures Insert at least one main picture and two detail pictures of your prototype. :warning: **Drawings, illustrations and other images are not allowed.** :::warning Drag-n-drop 3 pictures below : ![](https://i.imgur.com/PkyeHQx.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/WzTO9qg.png) ![Uploading file..._6uuubkt7m]() ::: ##### Prototype video Use your smartphone to make a short video (30s) showing your prototype in use, and post it on the Slack channel of your group. https://files.slack.com/files-pri/TT50JJYG3-F011M1NB1MW/video-1586124862.mp4 * * * ### Proposal n°2 : Hand shaped pliers ##### Actors :::warning - FOR WHOM? For kids aged up to 10 years old. - BY WHO? CARRIE Emmeline, BASSE Adja Nayette, MONMARCHE Anna, CASTANOU Sarah, ZHAO Huacheng (design & conception) - WITH WHOM? With the help of environment specialists (direct or indirect contact) and our project tutor who will help us for the conception part. ::: ##### Context :::warning - WHY? Through this playful object, we would like to revolutionize the approach of kids towards environment and ocean preservation. By making this object playful and attractive, our goal is to encourage kids to clean the oceans and raise their awareness about ocean pollution. - WHEN? Mostly during the vacation since it is a period when kids are free. - WHERE? Around oceans, seaside areas and more generally in areas where water is a renewable energy (not a pool for example). ::: ##### Features :::warning - WHAT? Hand shaped pliers to catch waste with a transparent stick people can draw on and customize, designed for kids. This object shall result in a positive future impact on childrens awareness towards environment and ocean pollution. Thanks to this object, the next generation will act more for the environment since habits would have been taken since their yougest age. - HOW? The hand shaped beak is supposed to catch waste of a certain size alon the seas in a funny and playful manner. ::: ##### Usage scenario Kids can access the hand shape pliers through a website, an application or game allowing them to be able to use this tool. It works like a gripper machine in the fun fairs, to make the collect of waste a little more fun, we put a hand instead of pliers. At the of the stick there is a trigger and by pressing it, the hand closes automatically so that you can catch the waste. :::warning **Initial context:** ![](https://i.imgur.com/qKX3kmm.jpg) Start by grabing the stick in the direction of the sea :::warning **Action 1:** ![](https://i.imgur.com/xXOVecL.jpg) While having the stick in your hand just target a waste :::warning **Action 2:** ![](https://i.imgur.com/hyWp60Q.jpg) Once the waste is targeted, place the stick on it so that the hand can be above the waste and be ready to close it ::: :::warning ![](https://i.imgur.com/kjaVM3L.jpg) You placed the hand properly above the waste, now by pressing the trigger at the end of the stick, close it so that it can catch the waste :::warning **Resolving situation:** ![](https://i.imgur.com/eFG1sxg.jpg) Now make sure the waste is well caught by the hand, and put it in a plastic bag with all the others garbage caught ::: ##### Benchmark List concurrents and relative projects and describe how they relate or differentiate to your project :::warning * Pliers to catch forest waste - Nature & Decouvertes : https://www.natureetdecouvertes.com/outdoor/randonnee/batons-marche/plogging-pince-a-dechet-de-marche-50167320?gclsrc=aw.ds&&gclid=Cj0KCQjwjoH0BRD6ARIsAEWO9Dvq46mgR-MX86cphB-7MS6aRT7ECOOmgmqGOEmLo0zP6utrJHKW5VAaAj8mEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds This object is different than ours due to the shape of the pliers beak that is less adapted for kids. * Colored pliers to catch waste - Voussert :https://www.voussert.fr/pince-ramasse-dechets-100-cm-fp-45760.html These pliers are colored which can be more attractive for kids than a regular one. ::: ##### Ressources We are expecting existing tutorials that can help you to materialize your proposal. You can search on youtube.com, instructables.com, thingiverse.com, etc. :::warning * Electric blue pliers to catch waste : https://youtu.be/6qN06zCM5kwwith This model has been an inspiration in terms of originality (which is provided by its flashy color). This kind of detail may indeed attract kids. * Wood customized pliers : https://youtu.be/uo0_j0UXXXQ This 100% customized pliers led us on the path of a customized pliers that would make kids feel not only involved but also interested in ocean cleaning. in reference name, link, how is it linked to your project *** ##### Prototype description :::danger Your prototype must be **a physical object** : images, drawings, diagrams and 3D files will not be considered as prototypes. ::: Describe here the materials and tools you've used to build your prototype. Test! :::info The goal of this phase is to improve your prototype using end-users feedback. ::: :::danger **Negative user feedback doesn't means your proposal is bad** : do not give up and analyse what are the pain points to solve in a new version. ::: ## Test and iterate your proposal ### 1. Test protocol Write below your test ptotocol : :::warning **Write here the ideal user profile (persona):** For our project, the ideal user profile would be children or very young teenagers (10-13 years old) ::: :::warning **Write here the goal of your test:** The goal of this test is to sensitize the young population about the issues/ dangers of water pollution via the use of a fun and playful prototype that they can use easily which is a landing net. ::: :::warning **Describe here the main feature you want to test:** Through this prototype, we want to test how it will be conducted when children use it (will it be easy to use or not? Are they going to enjoy it? or Is it going to be too difficult for them especially with the woods in their hands). Therefore, we will test the feasibility of the prototype and their satisfaction. ::: :::warning **Tell who will be conducting the tests (at least two persons per test):** We chose children as testers : they are Sarah's little brothers, aged from 10 to 16 years old. ::: :::warning **List and clearly describe all the actions that the user will have to perform to test your product according to your usage scenario:** - The tester will be showed a first video of Emmeline catching waste with our prototype - The tester will give his opinion on 3 points : the feasibility, the satisfaction in terms of design and interest the object triggers for kids, and the effeciency - Those feedbacks will be reported in the HackMD file - Emmeline will adjust the prototype depending on those feedbacks - A second testing will take place under the same process - Emmeline will be able to produce and finalize the last prototype ::: --- ### 2. First test #### User 1 :::warning - Kelyan - 10 years old - Primary school student - Nonexistant - Nonexistant - Home, through the watching a demonstration video - 20 minutes ::: ##### User feedback :::warning Note here at least 3 issues raised by the user: - When we see the object being used, we do not know what it is useful for : it could have many other uses - The design is not attractive enough for kids - There should be something that links the object with ocean and environment in terms of design ::: :::warning Note positive, neutral and negative feedback | Positive | Neutral | Negative | | --------| --------| --------| | It is really funny to use| We don't know what it is useful for| The design makes the object unclear in terms of goal| ::: :::warning The tester found it pretty funny and loved the concept of catching objects : kids do not need much to have fun ! ::: :::warning An additional guide or explanative tutorial to quickly explain kids about ocean cleaning and how important their role can be in using this object to clean oceans. ::: *** #### User 2 :::warning - Zoé - 12 years old - Middle school student - Nonexistant - Nonexistant - Home, through the watching of a demonstration video - 20 minutes ::: ##### User feedback :::warning Note here at least 3 issues raised by the user: - The object is too small - There should be something to put the waste in (like a small bin or something) - The object should be bigger to be more efficient ::: :::warning Note positive, neutral and negative feedback | Positive | Neutral | Negative | | --------| --------| --------| | It makes ocean cleaning a funny activity|None | It is very funny to do | ::: :::warning The tester enjoyed the object and wished she could test it in real life. ::: :::warning A small garbage bag should be added to our object in order for kids to be able to put the waste in it quickly. :: *** #### User 3 :::warning - Jeremy - 13 years old - Middle school student - Nonexistant - jeremymanf@gmail.com - Via whatsapp, through the watching of a demonstration video - 15 minutes ::: ##### User feedback :::warning Note here at least 3 issues raised by the user: - The material of the sticks at the extrimities is not ideal - The sticks at the extrimities do not seem to be solid enough, the tester feels like it is going to fall - The recipient should be colored in order to be more catchy ::: :::warning Note positive, neutral and negative feedback | Positive | Neutral | Negative | | --------| --------| --------| | It is an object adapted to kids thanks to its format| The achieved work is not bad| The object dosn't seem to be resistant enough | ::: :::warning The object has been well done for a first shot and for an object done at home. ::: :::warning The materials and the solidity of the sticks which hold the recipient should be changed or the system with the sticks should be reinforced so that the object doesn't break. ::: *** ### 3. Improve your prototype Insert below **at least 3 pictures** of your iteration showing your proposal evolution. :warning: **Drawings, illustrations and other images are not allowed.** :::warning Drag-n-drop 3 pictures below ![] (https://files.slack.com/files-pri/TT50JJYG3-F011BC183U7/92127308_250964255952669_7567852355463413760_n.jpg) ![] (https://files.slack.com/files-pri/TT50JJYG3-F011D2V1XPB/92241141_256589602406601_2760329439089786880_n.jpg) ![] (https://files.slack.com/files-tmb/TT50JJYG3-F0116PLG926-b2f80112b1/92053136_1091906517840508_8388146600253325312_n_720.jpg) ) ::: :::warning Describe the evolution of the prototype: - Replaced the elastic threads by "elastic bungee cords" for more solidity and less elasticity.. - Replaced the wood ends by an eternal rose sawn in two for more solidity and better waterproofness - Added tape around the rose to make it bigger, stronger and more flexible - Put tape to hold the rose tips to the elastic threads for a good support - Replaced the small plastic pot with the inside of a salad spinner. Indeed, it's bigger, has many more holes, is easier to handle and goes through the water much more easily - Kept the same size metal screw that I also taped at the bottom of the container - Passed the other ends of the elastic bungee cords through the two large holes at the ends of the container and then closed the ends of the cords with pliers - To finish, we thought it would be nicer if we shorten the elastic bungee cords by hanging them up one after the other as shown in the attached pictures:This makes them even more stable and easy to handle. Moreover, it is more suitable for children's size. ::: ##### Prototype video Use your smartphone to make a short video (30s) showing your improved prototype in situation of use, and post it on the Slack channel of your group. https://pwf-2020-2.slack.com/files/U010M09RGBA/F011PC152SC/video-1586183392.mp4 https://pwf-2020-2.slack.com/files/U010M09RGBA/F011ENYCDKP/video-1586183401.mp4 *** ### 4. Second test #### User 1 :::warning - Kelyan - 10 years old - Primary school - Nonexistant - Nonexistant - Home, through the watching of a detailed video - 15 minutes ::: ##### User feedback :::warning Note here at least 3 issues raised by the user: - The color is a good point but there should be some reminders of things kids like, such as customized 3D shapes etc - There should be several colors - The ropes are too long which could make the cleaning not very practical ::: :::warning Note positive, neutral and negative feedback | Positive | Neutral | Negative | | --------| --------| --------| | The idea of a strainer is excellent| None| The efficiency of the object is still limited| ::: :::warning The tester found the object even more funny and playful than at the first testing. ::: :::warning Basketball, heart or other childish 3D shapes should be added to the recipient. ::: *** #### User 2 :::warning - Zoé - 12 years old - Middle school student - Nonexistant - Nonexistant - Home, through a detailed video - 20 minutes ::: ##### User feedback :::warning Note here at least 3 issues raised by the user: - The object is still a little small for envrironments like oceans - The colors lack of coherence - The feasability of the object is compromised in our targeted environment due to its size ::: :::warning Note positive, neutral and negative feedback | Positive | Neutral | Negative | | --------| --------| --------| | The improvment of the protype has been really significant|The efficiency has neither increased nor decreased| The object is still very small| ::: :::warning The color has made a huge difference in the object's attractiveness. ::: :::warning The feasability of the object is compromised in our targeted environment due to its size : it would be adapted to smaller environments like lakes etc but not to oceans. ::: *** #### User 3 :::warning - Jeremy - 13 years old - Middle school student - Nonexistant - Nonexistant - Via WhatsApp, through the watching a detailed video - 15 minutes ::: ##### User feedback :::warning Note here at least 3 issues raised by the user: - The sticks at both extremities still do not seem to be resistant enough - The sticks material should be changed - ::: :::warning Note positive, neutral and negative feedback | Positive | Neutral | Negative | | --------| --------| --------| | The fact of replacing the transparent recipient by a colored one made the object much more adapted to kids | The feasability remained the same| The object is still as fragile as the first one | ::: :::warning The tester enjoyed the colorful aspect of the object as well and noticed it at first sight. ::: :::warning The solidity of the prototype has not been improved and definitely should because kids can sometimes be clumsy. ::: * * * ### 5. Define your final product According to users feedback rewrite your requirements specification. :::warning - What is the purpose of your product? To use it as a tool to reduce water pollution through low techs for kids. The main purpose is to collect waste and water will pass at the same time through the holes. ::: :::warning - What problem do you want to solve with it? Ocean/ Water pollution ::: :::warning - What features your product will have to achieve this objective? Rank the features in order of importance - Resistance :the product should be very resistant since it will be used in the water, therefore it won't be tainted. - Entertaining :It should entertaining and enjoyable since the product is for children, it shouldn't bother them or be too complicated - Flexibility : it should be easy to use, handy. - ... ::: *** # P3. Design ## Make your final prototype :::info Now that you have defined what is your best proposal it's time to make a greater version of it. You will present it to the jury during the final evaluation alongside the early prototypes made in the previous phase. ::: :::success A good prototype is self-explainatory : the user must be able to understand how it works without instructions or user manual. It must be fully functional and sufficiently strong to withstand several demonstrations in real conditions of use. ::: :::danger For this phase it is **mandatory** to use at least : - **Tinkercad** to design in 3D your product - **Tinkercad Circuits** to design the electronics - **Adobe XD** to make your prototype interactive. ::: ___ ### Ressources Here is a short list of useful websites and softwares for prototyping things. - [Make a box](https://makeabox.io/) : A website to create boxes that can be laser cutted - [Makercase](http://www.makercase.com/) : Another laser cutted boxes website - [templatemaker.nl](https://www.templatemaker.nl/) : To create quiclky paper objects that can be cutted with the laser cutter. - [Sculptris](http://pixologic.com/sculptris/) : A 3D sculpting tool, a fun way to create 3D models for 3D printing or laser cutting. - ... ::: Note in the section below all the projects and tools you've find to help you for the conception and fabrication of your final prototype. :::warning * **TOOLS:** * Tinkercad, https://www.ladn.eu/entreprises-innovantes/techforgood/projets-inspirants-techforgood-developpement-durable/ The materials used in order to build those low tech solutions to preserve the environment actually made us realize that very simple materials like wood or plastic can create big changes within our environment. * Arduino, we used this app in order to bring more esthetic to the final prototype and most importantly for it to be more playful and useful for the kids especially with the 3 different lights they will detect exactly when the prototype will be filled or not with rubbish. * Adobe XD, https://xd.adobe.com/view/db909d52-43a3-4e7a-52b8-829f7a4509fd-ada1/#access_token=eyJ4NXUiOiJpbXNfbmExLWtleS0xLmNlciIsImFsZyI6IlJTMjU2In0,creation of an application in order to guide kids on the usage scenario of our prototype and also to make it more attractive and suitable for the children. * New container: which is more attractive and useful than the previous ones. Consequently, this helps with the maneuverability of the prototype. * ... ::: ### Demonstrator design #### Drawing :::info Start by taking a sheet of paper and draw the global shape of your demonstrator, then explode it into the parts that compose it and draw them one by one. ::: Drag-n-drop below the pictures of your drawings, don't forget to write a caption for each image : :::warning ![](https://i.imgur.com/tVdwL1U.jpg) Those 3 drawings are meant to show the object and its system of functionning in its globality : the plastic recipient is decorated with childish shapes under the theme of the universe, and the object is solid thanks to this system of ropes attached to wood handles. ::: :::warning ![](https://i.imgur.com/8bHHIbJ.jpg) This drawing shows the inside part of the recipient with the wholes, the handles and the shapes that are big enough to be visible on top. ::: :::warning ![](https://i.imgur.com/OR1bc4I.jpg) The second drawing put the accents on the shape on top of the recipient. Indeed, shapes will be added in order to attract our target and make it enjoy the object, which will therefore encourage kids to use it. ::: :::warning ![](https://i.imgur.com/Z40UARM.jpg) This drawing shows the top part of the recipient, as well as the ropes and the wooden handles that are supposed to hadnle it. It aims to show the recipient in a global way : the color is blue, in link with the theme of the universe, and we made the choice of making the recipient as big as we could in order to answer the requests of the kids. ![](https://imgur.com/RGSwp9u.jpg) This screenshot shows the inside of our recipient. As one can see, wholes have been made everywhere and in an equal way so that the catching can be efficient. Moreover, handles have been added to facilitate the assembly with the ropes. ![](https://i.imgur.com/dqyZhOX.png) This screenshot shows the upper part of the recipient. Indeed, shapes have been willingly added in order to make the object catchy and playful for kids. Additionally, there is a scripture "Prends soin de ton univers" to make a play on words : the theme around the recipient is the universe, and at the same time, the object helps taking care of the oceans, which are part of the universe. ::: :::warning https://www.tinkercad.com/things/9LuMuYsodcW-amazing-inari-vihelmo/edit?sharecode=GJe9x3c_CU-2koSRmGCc09QEg7zFOQtvjPy37Rdyn4Y&sharecode=GJe9x3c_CU-2koSRmGCc09QEg7zFOQtvjPy37Rdyn4Y ::: - Use **Tinkercad circuits** and **Adobe XD** to design interactions :::warning ![](![](https://i.imgur.com/b2r5bph.png) This screenshot shows the 2nd page of the app which is quite self-explanatory.
