- Google Scholar: https://scholar.google.com/
- Zotero: https://www.zotero.org/
# Questions about Literature Search?
If you have any questions about identifying literature sources, please do drop them here and we'll cover them off in Matt's part of the session.
- How can we refer to content from meetings or webinars ?
- In terms of critical analysis - how much should we do in our write up? (I guess I'm asking in comparison to the leadership modules last year where that was quite heavy)
- What referencing style should we use? Harvard still?
- choose one and keep it consistancy across the writing.
- Is there an easy / reliable way to search for articles published or studies undertaken in a particular country? I've found a reasonable amount of studies around my chosen topic undertaken in the US but interested to see if anyone UK based has done it before?
- Roughly How many readings would you expect to see in the bibliography? (The handbook says to read around ‘one a week’. Does this mean we should have around 24 readings/materials?)
- It looks a feasible number. Keep it in mind that you should be able to justify and verify your clarifications along with "evidence" to support.
# Questions about the Handbook Updates?
If you have any questions on the handbook updates, please note them down below:
- Has there been a decision made on whether we're submitting a single report for both capstone & apprenticeship project report, or do we have to submit two reports, and what's the main differences between them if we need to submit 2 reports?
- You do have to submit two reports, but we are aiming to maximum the overlappings between your dissertation and Project Report.
- You will submit the dissertation first; the Project Report will be heavily based on this dissertation and we hope will only represent small tweaks/refinements based on the capstone, not a different document.
- Discussions so far with skills coach have suggested there should be a different 'spin' on the reports. Masters dissertation would be more technically detailed whereas apprenticeship report more focussed on the business need and impact?
- Justify your choice of data, techniques, solutions. That is saying why this?
- For both the dissertation and the Project Report, you can think about this in the following way. We want to understand the technical solution you have produced, the organisational constraints and imperatives, and the linkages between the two. We need to understand enough about the technical solution to understand how that addresses the organisation's problem, and we need to understand enough context to know that the technical solution was the most appropriate choice given that.
- Apprenticeship report template has things like project plan etc - is this relevant to the masters document?
- We do not always mandate a project plan for dissertations, but it always strenghtens it.
- Could we have something like a table of document sections and then just a simple fflag for each as to whether it is relevant for masters, apprenticeship report or both?
- This is already in the handbook. All sections are generally relevant for both. - Thanks but this isn't what we're hearing?
- Might be a silly question, but what's the 'handbook'?
- Canvas page for **Data**: https://ncl.instructure.com/courses/39935/pages/dissertation-handbook-2nd-edition?module_item_id=2277406
- I am concerned i do not have the 2nd edition of this handbook. The above link is not accessible to me ('access denied').
- Hi, if you are a data apprentice, please get in touch with Tong for access. If not, the handbook is available on your respective canvas page. For Cyber and SE, there is a handbook and the update is posted as "Supplementary guidance for your EPA Project Report". There are no two editions of handbook for cyber and SE.
- Thank you i have the supplementary document.
- Iain mentioned inclusion of stakeholder analysis and comms strategy that might have a place in a professional report but not in the dissertation. Would we include those in a dissertation, or not?
- We would like to see good coverage of these sorts of aspects in both the dissertation and the professional report.
# Breakout Discussion
In your groups, please spend 15 minutes discussing:
- Which other sessions would you like to see over the summer?
- What questions do you have about the capstone module(s) or the assignments?
## Group 1: Data Analytics (Facilitator: Matt and Tong)
*Use this space to capture notes from your discussion*
* Tool choice - Word vs LaTeX / RMarkdown
* Use of the tool the apprentices feel most comfortable with,
* We discussed that data projects may centre at different parts of the data lifecycle. One project can be relatively light on the data pipeline and centre around modelling, and the opposite might be true for the other. We expect coverage of all spects but specialisation down into a smaller part.

## Group 3: Software Engineering (Facilitator: Ahmed)
*Use this space to capture notes from your discussion*
* What sort of evidence is sufficient to quantify or qualify the success/limitations of the project?
* Your evaluation should evidence the quality and extent of success/limitation of the work (re-visit HCI evaluation techniques) and discuss with your supervisor about your evaluation plan
* Oral demonstration (to the two markers) is not marked but it is pass/fail so it must be done. After giving an overview of the work, you need to demonstrate the product itself and how it works and what you contributed to
* Avoid technical jargon. Assume the reader is not familiar with the frameworks and technologies used, so talk in terms of what the thing is (e.g. Database or user interface framework), then between brackets you can put the name of the specific tech/framework you used so if the person does not know it, it will still read nicely.
* We are more interested in the 'why' of your design decisions. E.g. why use MySQL vs other popular DBs from a technichal and business perspective rather than how you connected to the database or how you fetched data from it.
* Keep writing and send for feedback - this will help you clear many questions and surface any potential issues that we can handle early on.
* Also, feel free to chase us and let us know when you need meetings rather than wait for us to follow up with you!
* Clarification regarding comms strategy: this is not required in your dissertation. Please note, comms strategy is different to organisational/business strategy, which must be included in dissertation as well as the report.
