How to visualize a phenomenon that is as challenging as diversity?

The members of the DCR community do not come from the same place. Even those coming from the same place have different backgrounds. We have been exposed to different life experiences, different school and value systems, and thus have developed different perspectives that allow us to interpret and solve problems differently. We are all unique!

We hesitated to include a map showing the birthplaces of DCR members, as “origin” isn’t a factor of a single variable, but a factor of multiple variables all intersecting and combining together – and it is a very subjective one. There are multiple ways to think about it. Your place of birth is not necessarily where you live(d) or feel at home. And depending on who you speak with, you name the country, the city, the neighborhood, or even your family to designate your origin.

We would like to see a world in which only quality counts and “origin” does not matter. But we are not blind to inequalities. No one remains a blank page and it does make a difference whether you grew up in Heilbronn, Heze in China or Hajjah in Yemen. Nonetheless, we do not want to reproduce stereotypes that might come up when thinking about these places. This is why this visualization is not designed to give you answers, but to initiate a dialogue.
