FAA Part 107 sUAS Test

Laws

  • .55 lbs is the minimum drone weight to be registered
    55 lbs is the maximum drone weight
  • You must be 13 years old to register
  • You must be 16 years old to take the test
  • The test remains valid for 24 months after taking it
  • 400 feet above ground level is the altitude that you can reach when flying drone
  • 500 feet below clouds is the level you have to maintain when flying
  • 2,000 feet away from guy wires and clouds horizontally
  • 100mph is the max you can fly
  • 3 Statute miles visibility. Thats how far you need to see to fly your drone
  • 8 is the number of hours you have to go withou alcohol to fly
  • .04 legal alcohol level
  • 1 year after narcotic conviction to fly
  • 30 minutes after sunset is how long you can fly but you have to have anti collision lights
  • 500 dollars is the minimum amount of damages for filing a FAA report (anything higher you must report)
  • You have 10 days after accident to file report

Airspace

  • Class A- 18000 and above is all class A
  • Class B- Upside down wedding cake over big airports
  • Class C- Smaller upside down wedding cake
  • Class D- Small airport with no instrument approach

Need ATC (air traffic control) permission to fly in A, B, C, or D (90 days in advance)

Radio

  • CTAF- Used by pilots to announce something
  • MULTICOM (122.9 or 122.95) - reserved frequencies for very small airports
  • UNICOM
  • AWOS- weather
    Radio Talk - Simply adds clarity to the old radio technology
  • Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo, Foxtrot, Golf, Hotel, India, Juliett, Kilo, Lima, Mike, November Oscar, Papa, Quebec, Romeo, Sierra, Tango, Uniform, Victor, Whickey, X ray, Yankee, Zulu

Physics

  • Stalls- When the plane exceeds the critical angle of attack
  • Load Factor- Increases during turns. Puts more stress on the airplane
  • Center of Gravity- Make sure the limits of the COG are not exceeded. Found in the Pilot's operating handbook or UAS flight manual.

Sectional Charts

* Much of the sectional chart questions and info can simply be found in the legend.

  • Latitude- North and South
  • Longitude- East and West
  • Numbers grow as you move north, and as you move west
  • There's two types of north. True north and magnetic north.

Airports

  • Runway Patterns- Almost always take off and land into the wind. Generally circle to the left. Helicopter traffic goes off to the right.
  • Runway Markings- Runway 09/9= facing about 90 degrees. Parallel runways also have a L, R, C for left right and center. Bars at the end show the width of the runway.
  • Compass Headings- 0 is north, 270 is West, 90 is East, 180 is South.

Documents

  • User Manual- Maintnance schedule, how to care for your battery. (Doesnt actually exist)
  • Sectional Charts- Protected areas, restricted areas, moas, airport info, etc.
  • Chart Supplement- a book with even more info about the airspace surrounding an airport
  • NOTAM- Notices to Airmen. Timely info needed at specific times.
    Example- How would a remote PIC check notams? Answer- By obtaining a briefing via an online source such as 1800 WXBrief.com
  • METAR and TAF- Weather info. KLAX- airport name with a K. 161753Z- UTC timecode. AUTO- automatically generated. 14021G26KT- wind speed. 140 degrees, 21 to 26 knots for the gusts. 1 1/2SM- 1.5 statute miles of visibility. +TSRA BR- Heavy thunderstorms with rain and mist. BKN008- broken clouds at 800 feet. OVC012CB- Overcast clouds at 1200 feet with Cumulonimbus. 18/17 temperature in celsius.

Weather

  • Density Altitude- Higher places have a low density altitude, low places have a high density altitude.
  • Fronts- Divides weather patterns. A bunch of cold air meets a bunch of warm air. The division is called a front.
  • Wind Shears- sudden drastic changes in wind. Can happen at any altitude.
  • Structural Icing- Ice forming on the wings of the plane.
  • TS Life Cycle- 1. Cumulus clouds. 2. Mature. Most dangerous step. 3. Dissipating. Can see down drafts as it calms.
  • Humidity- Less visibility, more efficiency as air is heavier
  • Unstable Air- Hot and humid. Hot air moves around a little more so it is more unstable. Can cause turbulence.
  • Stable Air- Visibility can be poor. Steady rain is also possible.
  • Nimbus- big heavy clouds.
  • Stratus- High, light, airy clouds.

Team (The FAA acts like you will be flying a drone as a team)

  • Visual Observer- someone who watches your line of sight. Required for POV
  • PIC- Remote pilot in command. You. The pilot. Any question where they ask who's responsible for blank, its most likely the PIC.
  • CRM- Crew resource management. Managing the environment for flying.

Risk

  • Hyperventilation
  • Alcohol
  • Fatigue
  • Scanning- Scan the sky by focusing on different segments of the sky for short intervals.

FAA is stupid and wants you to not act in these ways

  • Macho- dont act macho when flying.
  • Impulsivity- dont be impulsive when flying
  • Invulnerability- dont think 'it can't happen to me'
  • Resignation- dont think 'it doesn't matter what I do. Im not in control'
  • Anti authority- dont do things specifically to disobey rules.

Testing Tips

  • Study and Cram- Study all of this and take note of the things that arent sticking. Write those down on and read through it right before the test. Then write it down again on the test when you begin.
  • Process of Elimination- theres only three questions and usually one is really stupid so fifty/fifty if you do not know a question.
