Since 2016, I, like many others, have undergone numerous periods of confusion and exploration. Fortunately, I have consistently walked the path of Ethereum with unwavering determination.
Through these repeated explorations, I gradually clarified my own position. While I lack boastful eloquence and am not particularly verbose in a crowd, I possess an intense focus and a unique understanding of execution, details, and human care.
These characteristics align exceptionally well in event planning and organization. And if, by chance, you have grown alongside the development of the Ethereum core community, intimately understanding the cultural atmosphere and core spirit of the Ethereum community, these qualities shine brightly.
Using events as a foundation, I believe it will be an excellent starting point.
Essentially, Ethereum's openness has already established it as a public good.
During Zuzalu's two-month co-living experience, interactions between individuals and their emotions were deeply experienced. What a person does, their ideals, values, and social contributions are inseparable from the person themselves. A person's thoughts, life experiences, personal characteristics, and interests are deeply embedded in what they are currently doing.
The author believes that the ultimate goal of a product or undertaking, if not for better serving society and humanity, is destined to be short-lived and unsustainable in the long run.
The value of public goods depends on their maximum contribution to society and human well-being. People's understanding of public goods also stems from their understanding of physical infrastructure. The establishment of public goods is more about providing a relatively stable place, open for all external affairs to freely enter and exit.
Firstly, this place allows free movement. You can stay here freely without time restrictions, without the necessity of being a community token holder.
Secondly, this place should have basic provisions. You can access all things here, use all the tools, propose any idea, and even contribute directly or initiate external donations to improve the place according to your perception of what's better.
Lastly, it should strive for sustainability. It can be a temporary but essential public good, built for transitioning to achieve the ultimate goal of the longest chain. Yet, its ultimate purpose remains the sustainability of a public good.
Why choose to start with events rather than educational initiatives?
Compared to educational initiatives, perhaps as long as you're interested and willing, you can compile and disseminate information through publicly available materials, which is relatively simpler.
But events cannot.
The essence of events is the interaction and communication between individuals. Its core is openness. The more you reveal to the outside, the more the outside will approach you. Your attractiveness is also determined by the depth of your thoughts, optimism, positivity, unique aesthetics, and human care.
Of course, public goods education is not unnecessary; on the contrary, it's urgently needed. However, it's also challenging to begin.
Each community or individual has their own understanding of public goods, and providing an appropriate definition is evidently difficult. They need to be familiar with a significant portion of Ethereum's ecosystem infrastructure to even form a basic concept of public goods.
The approach of the Ethereum Public Goods Lab is to design a series of community events in the early stages, from carefully designing each event's theme, inviting specific speakers, crafting deep questions, and ultimately producing and releasing content. This naturally develops into high-quality educational content. In the future, this foundation will expand to design public goods hackathons, collaborate with Ethereum ecosystem communities/organizations focused on public goods donations, and promote the continuous development of public goods hackathon activities. This will provide a long-term and sustainable foundation for the construction of public goods within the Ethereum community.
