Today was the most tiring Monday I've ever had. Since there was a new colleague joining our company, I had to explain the process of importing datasets into our database (under the ~~surveillance~~**watchful** eye of my boss ~~at the same time~~ because he said he wanted to refresh his memory about the workflow😅). It turned out to be ok (though I didn't know what I was mumbling about most of the time), and my boss was happy **with**~~about~~ it.

今天是我~~生活~~人生(这辈子)中最疲累的周一。因为公司有新来的同事，8所以我必须解释~~进口datasets~~**把资料输入资料库**的过程，~~同时老板看看我~~**在老板的监视下**，因为说他需要~~重新记住~~**复习**这个过程。最后算是都过得~~好~~**还可以**，~~甚至~~**虽然**大多时间我自己也不知道我~~喃喃的~~在胡说什么，老板很满意。

今天我和一些外语老师见面吃午饭，分享教课的经历。这是我第一次去这样的活动所以大家都是陌生人(也可说:大家都不认识)。我感觉~~及~~**既**奇怪又尴尬。在我对面有一~~个~~位五十几~~年~~**岁**的英文老师。她滔滔不绝地讲她学校里发生的事情~~三十分钟了~~讲了三十分钟。不巧的是，我觉得很无聊但是不能调("換"比較常見)座位。下次我会~~准备好好~~**好好准备**离开的借口。

I've made some progress on demonstrating the workflow with the new ~~colleage~~**colleague**. She took ~~the~~ notes for all the steps to import data into **the** database, and she will ~~drive~~ **be able to do it on her own** next time. I think it is going to be like playing 'Keep Talking and **hope** nobody explodes', because I will have to give her instructions when she ~~is importing~~**imports** the data. Thankfully, it is just a database that we are dealing with and we are not going to defuse a bomb.

I've got a question: In 'I will have to give her instructions when she imports the data.', why can't I use 'when she **is importing** the data'? Does that mean I should only use present tense to describe something happens in the future? Does 'I will be giving instructions to her when she imports the data' work?
Good question! It sounds fine but it is not natural.
We don't usually use this 'present continuous' in spoken language. E.g. 'When I am resting I will call you' is not common at all. We will say "When I have a rest I will call you."
You might say, 'When she is importing the data, please make sure she fully understands how to...' -- using the 'present continous' emphasises this sense of 'at that exact moment you must do something very specific'.
To me, it sounds more natural (and a bit more relaxed) to say 'I will give her instructions when she imports the data'.
Also, the word 'give instructions' is a little bit formal. I would prefer to say: 'I will show her how to import the data'.

今天是我这辈子中最漫长的周二。我整天陪着我朋友的两个小孩子。 我真的不理解家庭主妇是怎么办到的!

漫长 màncháng: 常用来表示一段很长的时间。通常如果那段时光非常地无聊，只要你主观上觉得无趣、浪费生命，就算只有五分钟，还是会用「漫长」来形容，例如:漫长的会议、漫长的考试、漫长的讲座。

学习中文的时候，我突发奇想，我应该开始对自己说中文，(因为)这样能提高口语的信心。当大人~~来~~学习外语**的时候**，学习过程中障碍比较多，包括没有足够时间，~~感觉尴尬说话~~**说话的时候觉得尴尬**，记忆力(不太确定这边想说什么，是想说「记忆力没有小孩好」吗?)。我觉得最难的是对自己有耐心。其实，完美主义~~很没有帮助来学习语言~~(对于学习语言没什么帮助)。每天都要学习，~~慢慢就要进步~~(才能慢慢进步? 或是写一下英文，我比较好根据你想表达的意思修改)。 ~~过上~~(不确定这边是什么字，但省略这两个字不影响句子的完整性)学习的过程需要接受错误，重复~~试试~~(尝试)。每天(我)(因为后面已经有提醒自己，所以前面这个「我」可以省略)都要~~自我记住~~**提醒自己**采取这个态度。

She said she wanted to go to city centre because she had been stayed at her flat the whole week. We ended up going to Truedan, which is~~(or was?)~~ a **Taiwanese** bubble tea shop ~~from Taiwan~~. We both agreed that is ~~(or was?)~~ the best bubble tea shop in London because their tapioca balls are(or were?) **here you can use either 'are/were'. If you say 'they are amazing' it means in general. If you say 'they were amazing' it refers to today** amazing.

It was the last working day of the year, so my boss suggested playing 'Code Name' together. It was so difficult for a non-native speaker to play this game with 4 British people. I lost the game (everyone saw that coming) in the end, and my boss and I rea~~s~~lised we should have been on the same team because he always knew what words my clue was for.

Christmas Eve always feels a bit strange, as if you should be doing something special. I just chilled in the morning and then went to feed my friends' cats. Realising we needed more desserts for tomorrow, I quickly rustled up some mince pies (with an almond topping) and brownies, then whipped up a chocolate mousse... Time flies in the kitchen. It is relaxing to be absorbed and in a kind of flow state.

第一次去英國人家過聖誕節真是既期待又怕受傷害，何況是去老闆家，希望聖誕節後不會被炒魷魚🤣
It is my first time having Chrsitmas at [with] a British family. I am so excited and also a bit worried. The main reason for that [reason why] is because I am visiting my boss's family, [so let's] hope I won't get fired on Boxing Day.

老闆載我去他家的路上先帶我去Clifton晃了一圈，看當地著名的吊橋。途中還經過一個維多利亞時期的觀光景點，想到一百五十年前臺灣人還在求生存的時候，英國人已經在享受人生，真是令人好生羨慕。

On the way to Henry's, Henry took me on to a little tour in Clifton and walked across the famous Clifton Suspension Bridge. We also encountered a sight-seeing spot dates back to Victorian time. It made me so jealous thinking of Taiwanese people were just trying to survive, and British people had already been enjoying their lives 150 years ago.

到老闆家後，跟老闆夫婦一起吃了咖哩，喝薑汁汽水，還吃了英國國民品牌Magnum的冰棒。後來老闆太太正要以聖誕老人身分回信給她兒子的時候，我自告奮勇說要幫忙寫信，這樣才認不出是她的筆跡。於是，我體驗了久違的英文聽寫測驗，與學生時代不同的是，這次老師是英國腔。寫完老闆太太才想到，兒子還不識字，所以也只能唸給兒子聽，結果我白忙一場（口語上，「瞎忙】很適合用在這邊）🤣

We had curry, ginger beer and Magnum(one of Brits' favourite ice lolly[ice cream] brands) ice lollies with Henry and Claire(Henry's wife) together. I volunteered to do the writing for the Father Christmas note [volunteered to write the note for Father Christmas] for Charlie(their son), so that he won't recognise that it was his mother who wrote the note [so he won't recognise the handwriting]. I ended up doing a listening test and I wrote down all the words Claire said. The thing that was different from the tests I did when I was a student was that the teacher spoke in a British accent. (In Taiwan, most English learning materials and tests at school are American English and the recordings are read by Americans) Claire realised that Charlie would not be able to read the note just right after I finished it, so my worry was pointless🤣. (She thought it was polite to write back to Charlie because he had sent a card to Father Christmas (with Henry's help))

今天在家耍廢了一天，所以日記將以流水帳的形式呈現。先是早上賴床到十點半才心滿意足地離開床，龜速弄了早餐，接著再慢慢把前一天沒設定完的neovim(一個工程師常用的文字編輯器)搞定、研究新鍵盤的配置，希望新的一年能有更高的工作效率。

I did nothing today, so today's diary is going to be like running account [to be fairly dry]. I got out of bed at half past 10 to my satisfaction [which was ideal]. Then I made my breakfast with the speed of turtle [at turtle speed]. And finished configuring neovim (a text editor that is commonly used by software developers) that I had been working on yesterday. I also did some research on the new layout for my new keyboard. I hope the upgraded neovim and keyboard will bring me a better work efficiency [will help me work more efficiently] in the new year.

我刚刚看完一片文章关于一身学习汉语的非母语者[一篇關於非母語者終身學習漢語的文章 or 一篇文章，內容關於終身學習漢語的非母語者]。要以身就学习汉语[not sure what is 以身就]
他们都是有献身[**全心投入**比較適合。獻身比較會用在犧牲小我，完成大我的事情上。例如:獻身教育、(科學)研究、宣教、福音事工]和自律。他们想要坚持，活到老学到老。我目前的目标就是用汉语来日常~~的~~沟通。学习到能变自动化[自動駕駛]需要是大量的功夫[需要下很多功夫]。听了和多便[很多遍]，听到你不用想了[可以用**不假思索**]。。。
终于达到脱口而出的程度了。(這句單獨來看沒有任何問題，但是放在最後一句有點奇怪。根據前面的語境，這邊改成[最終才能達到脫口而出的程度。]會比較通順)

这样[這件事]鼓励我坚持学习。虽然有时进步好像有点慢，但是过程没有什么近路(or捷徑)。享受这个日常过程很重要[每天享受這個過程很重要]。我会尝试创造好的日常学习节奏[我會試著培養有效的學習紀律]。

前幾天看到BBC iPlayer播出一個短短幾秒的動畫片段,片名是【男孩、鼴鼠、狐狸與馬】(The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse)，覺得它很療癒，特別記下了名字。後來在老闆家發現他們有這部動畫的原著，就窩在沙發上看完了。看完覺得這本書很溫暖，我就決定要買一打回去分贈親友。

I encountered an animation clip on BBC iPlayer few days ago, and the title was The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse. I found it very therapeutic, so I made a mental note of the title. Then I found that there was an original book of that animation at my boss's when I visited. I curled up on the sofa and read it. It is a heart-warming book, and I'm going to get a dozen of the book and give it to my family and friends.

今天跟媽媽講電話聊到【男孩、鼴鼠、狐狸與馬】, 因為這本書最近在台灣很出名，所以媽媽也想買幾本送給親友。於是，我的購物車結帳時總數量變成了兩打書。我其實前幾天趁著亞馬遜打折有先買了幾本，但寄送過程撞到書角，所以這次我決定跟水石書店買。

I talked about The Boy, the Mule [mole!], the Fox and the Horse with my mum on the phone. Since the book is quite famous in Taiwan, so [we don't need to use "so" after "since"] my mum wanted to buy some books [to buy it] for relatives. Hence, I ended up having two dozens of [two dozen.. but more natural to say "over twenty"] books in the shopping trolley [basket] when I checked out. I actually bought some books from Amazon few days ago, but the corner of all the [no need for 'the' here] three books got creased during delivery. That is why I decide[d to] get the books from Waterstones this time.

這幾天聽了這本書的作者在HTB教會的分享，很喜歡他充滿智慧、不做作的話語。說不定之後我會想用他的影片練習聽打出逐字稿，甚至練習翻譯看看。

I've been listening to the talks [given by the author] at HTB church by the author of the book. I quite enjoyed [we don't use "quite" here or it sounds like "didn't enjoy a lot". we say "really enjoyed"] his [wise and unpretentious way of speaking] words that were full of wisdom and not pretentious at all. Maybe I will try to transcribe some of the videos and even translate some of them.

昨天晚上入睡之前[’睡覺前’或是’睡前’會比較自然]我把闹钟拨到早上8点因为我知道睡眠会很差［知道’我會睡不好’］。我猜对了，我醒来得很累［醒來覺得很累／覺得沒睡飽］。原因就是我照顾朋友的两只小猫。夜晚中间［半夜］小猫哭了［一直叫，這邊也可以說一直吵］，醒了我几次［把我吵醒好幾次］。

Last night before I fell asleep I set my alarm to 8am because I knew I would not sleep well. And I was right, I woke up tired. I was cat sitting for friends and during the night the cats were miaowing and woke me up several times.

我一般喜欢小狗比小猫［通常比起貓我更喜歡狗］。你可以和小狗享受更温暖的关系因为他们和主人有特别的纽带［連結］。相比之下，小猫保持独立[個性獨立]，会对待每个人一样[對待所有人一視同仁]。
Generally I prefer dogs to cats. You can have a closer relationship with dogs because they have a certain kind of bond with their owners. By contrast, cats like their independence and treat everyone the same.

今天起床喉嚨有點不舒服，我就在家看了整天Charlie Mackesy的影片。我很喜歡他對於基督徒的各種比喻，非常幽默又一針見血地點出基督徒令人厭惡的原因。他對信仰的切入點跟傳道人不同，不落俗套又很接地氣，我覺得他的影片很適合分享給身邊對信仰有興趣的朋友。

I woke up to a sore throat this morning, so I stayed at home and watched Charlie Mackesy's videos the whole day. I really enjoyed his metaphors for Christians. The way he described why Christians are(were?) [are! they still are haha] annoying was humourous and hit the bullseye. His perspective on belief is(was?) [is!] different from preachers, no [without] cliche and down to earth, and that's why I thought his videos would be suitable for my friends who have an interest in belief.

今天跟三個室友一起吃晚餐，廚師室友負責烤羊排，其他人負責烤馬鈴薯。我原本只想簡單煮個泡麵打發一餐，結果我麵才放下去，他們就問我要不要加一，嗜肉如命的我當然答應了。羊排非常好吃，令人回味無窮。

I had dinner with my three flatmates today. One of them is a chef, so he was in charge of grilling the lamb chops, and the rest roasted some potatoes. I was going to eat instant noodles as my simple dinner, but they asked me if I'd like to join them when I put the noodles in the saucepan. As a person [As someone] who cannot live without meat, that was the simplest question to answer in the world. The lamb chops were amazing, I cannot wait to join the next BBQ session.

The weather was so good, I felt obliged to get [outside]. out of the door. I decided to walk for a little while before taking the tube to Chinatown to buy some pork short ribs. I'm going to Lidl tomorrow for sweat [sweet!] heart cabbage, then I will have all the ingredients for Bak Kut Teh (it's the Hokkien way to pronounce 肉骨茶)

今天開工，整個早上基本上只是在檢查去年留下哪些事情沒做完而已。下午帶了新同事複習怎麼把資料輸入進資料庫，結果不只是他，連我都快忘光要怎麼弄了。幸好我之前有做筆記，看了幾分鐘就想起來了。

It was the first working day of the year. I spent almost the whole morning just to check what are the things that weren't done last year [just checking what hadn't been finished last year]. (I know there's something wrong here, but I don't know how to fix it 😅 I still struggle with putting clauses after 'what' 🥲) I showed the new colleague how to import data into the database again. She was not the only one that nearly forgot the whole process, even I got stuck at some points. Fortunately, I've (or had?) [i had taken. because you took the notes in the past] taken some note[s] on how to do it, it only took me [a] few minutes before it all came back to [me]. my memory.

今天我和朋友一起去徒步[通常會說健行、爬山(如果路程高低起伏比較多的話)或是徒步旅行。「徒步」通常只有「用腳走」的意思，例如:徒步環島]一个半小时。天气很晴天[晴朗]，但是风很大。徒步的时候可以同时享受景色和对话[這邊的享受用得很好👍]。我觉得徒步也很放松[是很讓人放鬆的活動]。对我来说，住在城市外面对身体健康很好。全身能轻松，透气呼吸。不能否则[否認]住房环境[更常用居住環境]对人们幸福很有影响[影響很大/有很大的影響力]。

Today i went hiking for an hour and a half with friends. The weather was clear and bright but there was a strong wind. While hiking you can enjoy landscape and good conversation. I think hiking is relaxing. Living outside of a city is good for our health. The whole body can relax and breathe fresh air. You can't deny the effect of a living environment on our happiness.

今天我做了欧式的早饭，包括奶酪，鸡蛋和火腿。早饭一般我只会吃有果酱上[塗上果醬的麵包]的面包，喝一杯茶。大多数英国人早饭会吃面包或者谷物（cereal）[通常會用"麥片"或"榖片"代表cereal]和牛奶。虽然好吃但是糖量比较高。我尝试坚持低糖饮食，这样精力水平如一[比較容易維持精神好的狀態]，减少头痛，提高睡眠质量，也维持体重健康[健康的體重]。

Today I had a continental breakfast with cheese, eggs and ham. For breakfast I usually have toast with jam and a cup of tea. Most English people have toast, or cereal with milk. Even though cereal tastes good, it is high in sugar. I try to stick to a low sugar diet. It keeps my energy levels more consistent, reduces headaches, improves sleep quality and helps maintain a healthy weight.

今天晚上跟阿瓊去打了壁球。雖然我是第一次打球，但她很會教，馬上能指出我的姿勢哪裡有問題，過了不久我們就可以對打幾球了。但我可能太久沒運動，晚餐又吃太飽，加上壁球是一種要一直來回衝刺的球類，我跑到差點吐出來，幸好休息一下就沒事了。壁球打起來很紓壓，希望可以有空多打球。

I played squash with Jacqueline this evening. Even though it was my first time, after Jacqueline pointed out the question [problem] I had when hitting the ball, we managed to play back and forth a few times. She is such an amazing coach! Maybe I hadn't done sports for too long, or I had too much dinner, plus you need to dash frequently [run around a lot] when playing squash, I had to pause for a while otherwise I was going to puke [be sick]. Fortunately, after a short break, I was on the court again. I found it very stress relieving to play squash and I hope I can play it more often.

今天我去了游泳[去游了泳]。露天池水非常冷所以我只能游十分钟永。我希望明天能游泳二十分钟。水温很低的时候需要慢慢让身体习惯温度。从水起来[從泳池上來/上岸的時候]的时候我感觉很积极[神清氣爽/精神飽滿]。虽然空气很冷[氣溫很低]，但是我很开心。外面做活动[戶外活動/運動]既好玩又健康。

Today I went swimming. The water in the outdoor pool was really cold so I only swam for 10 minutes. I hope I can manage to swim for 20 minutes tomorrow. When the water temperature is very low you have to let your body adjust slowly. Getting out of the cold water I feel energised. Even though the air is cold, I am happy. Doing outdoor activities is fun and healthy.

今天去看了電影【超難搞先生】，湯姆漢克斯在裡面飾演脾氣很差的主角。有一天，他的社區搬來一家人，觀眾隨著太太的視角，慢慢發現主角藏在心裡的祕密。剩下我就不先暴雷了，我蠻喜歡這個故事的結局。

I went to see "A Man Called Otto" today, Tom Hanks starred as a grumpy man in the film. One day, there is a family moving in his community [a new family moves into his neighbourhood]. From the wife's point of view, the audience get to see the secret that is hidden in the protagonist's mind. I won't spoil the rest of the film, and I really enjoyed the outcome of the film.

這週終於結束了，雖然一開始示範工作流程給新同事看很崩潰，像是我常常不知道要怎麼跟他明確指示要按畫面中某個位置的按鈕，總是要一陣雞同鴨講才能讓他理解我的意思🤣 幸好過了一個禮拜，我們兩個都有稍微上軌道一點，今天我讓他自己操作一次，看到他大概都會了，稍微能感覺到主管當初帶我的成就感。

This week has finally come to an end. I was still so stressed out when showing the new colleague the workflow. For example, I found it extremely difficult to tell her where the button was on her screen. It took ages for me to express my idea awfully([i] had to use sign language sometimes😅). Fortunately, things got a bit better after a week [things improved by the end of the week]. I felt more confident and less nervous teaching her. She also got more familiar with the whole process. She tried to do the import on her own today, and she did it perfectly. Now I understand why my manager was chuffed to see my progress.

Tonight I went to a concert by a guitarist and a singer. They performed Spanish music, it was beautiful and moving. Music in the south of Spain is influenced by Arabic culture. These are often very sad and plaintive love songs. But flamenco music can also be lively. It has a distinctive rhythm and the guitar is very fast so everyone wants to stand up and dance. Listening to live music is one of my favourite activities.

Today I went to a fairly unknown place on the coast. A friend recommended it to me as a place to enjoy beautiful nature and walk along the seashore. I was also looking forward to this trip because I always enjoy swimming in the sea. Fortunately it was perfect
weather, no cloud in sight, and the sea was calm. I was quite surprised to see a group of people without clothes on. In European countries like France and Germany, skinny dipping is quite common. But in the UK there are specific beaches where you can go and do that.

Who ever invented "skinny dipping" is a genius🤣

昨天拿出了塵封已久的任天堂3DS來玩神奇寶貝日月版(有木木梟的版本)，破了一些進度。木木梟真的很可愛，每次打電動的時候都有被療癒的感覺。

I took out my dust-covered Nintendo 3DS to play Pokemon Sun and Moon (That's the version that has Rowlet in it.), and I made some progress. Rowlet is soooooo cute, it always so therapeutic to play it.

話說我後來訂了三十本書，送來的時候分成六個箱子送來，有種大戶的感覺。🤣 水石書店不愧是書店，送來的書幾乎都毫髮無傷。

昨天跑去阿琼家煮牛肉面，享用美食真的是台湾人的抒压活动首选，虽然要花一点时间准备食材，但结果还是很令人满意。我们昨天发现一件事情，因为之前都是下午花两三个小时煮，昨天晚上用不到两小时，肉还没有煮到很软嫩，我们的结论就是果然还是要妥善利用上班时间煮才会好吃。
I went to Jacqueline's place to cook beef noodle soup yesterday. Enjoying ~~decent~~[good] food is the first choice for Taiwanese [wanting] to de-stress. Though it took some time to prepare the ingredients and ~~stew~~[cook] the soup, the result was still satisfying. ~~We found one thing~~ [One thing we realised was that], since we would normally spend 2-3 hours in the afternoon [cooking it] ~~to cook~~ ~~it~~, and [last night] we [only] spent less than 2 hours [on it]~~last night~~, the beef was not ~~very~~ [as] tender ~~we would get~~ ~~as usual~~. 在鬼打墙好一阵子之后今天工作终于有点进展 [😯 👻鬼？]，我觉得在新创工作的问题就是很多事情都还没有特定的规则可循，任务的先后次序也常常变化，每次事情做到一半，需求就改了，又要重新规划、执行。不过最近我们团队也一起慢慢摸索出更有效率的协作模式，这两周开始用看板来把每个专案的状态视觉化，未来应该大家能更了解彼此的进度，调整工作步调。

鬼打牆: 原本是指在夜裡或郊外、墳場獨自在路上迷路的一種說法。「鬼打牆」一詞現在引申為在一件錯誤的事情上打轉，且不斷重複。

After banging my head against the wall [where is this in the 中文？😄], I finally made some progress at work this week. I think one of the problem of start-ups is that there are no many rules to follow. Also, the priority of tasks can change quite frequently. sometimes, the requirements change ~~the~~ half way [through] ~~when I'm working on it~~, then I have to make ~~the~~[another] plan and ~~implement~~[start] all over again. But I can see our team are trying to figure out a more efficient way to collaborate. We've been using kanban board to visualise the status of each project in the past two weeks, and it has been working fine so far. Hopefully, we can understand each other's progress better and adjust our pace accordingly.

最近睡觉前一直忍不住滑手机，结果不小心手滑买了很贵的陈锐音乐会门票。看来精神状况好坏对于能否做出理智的决定真的有影响。今天打电话给我妈，提到我其实还想买隔天那一场的票，但那是我要回英国前一天晚上的时间，想说把时间留下来陪家人吃晚餐就先没买(而且票价真的不便宜)。结果我妈说最近台湾政府税收有多的钱要发给全民每人六千台币，这样就有钱买了。最后我买了两张票，期待跟妈妈的约会🥰

I've been failing to resist the urge to scroll on my phone before I go to bed (even before I fall asleep), and I accidentally bought a really expensive Ray Chen concert ticket. Today, my bosses joined the data importing squad. My manager jokingly said don't assign any task to him when he had heard that my boss is going to help us with some importing tasks, I found out the reason today. Normally, software engineers would use GitHub to version control their code. They would select the files they have made changes, write commit messages to explain what the changes are, then upload to GitHub. My boss just edited one file but somehow he uploaded four files, and I don't know how to fix that because that never happened to me before. We called out my manager to save the day.

今天跟主管在寫程式的時候，他用ChatGPT幫忙寫了一段程式碼。雖然不完全正確，但看得出來假以時日，它能寫出更符合使用者需求的答案。後來我看了一些網友分享他們怎樣使用ChatGPT，真是超乎想像，從程式碼、履歷、甚至合約他都能幫你迅速生成一定水準的回覆，人類只需要小幅度的修改就可以交件了，科技真是日新月異。

When my manager and I were writing code today, he used ChatGPT to write some of the code. Though the initial response was not quite what we wanted, ~~but~~ we could see that given more time, it will produce more suitable responses ~~to~~ [for] users. Then I did a bit [of] googling to see how other people use ChatGPT, it was mind blowing. You can ask it to write not just code, but also CVs, even contracts, and you will get an OK response in few seconds. You only need to edit the response in [a] few places and it will be ready to go. The speed of technology growth is amazingly fast.
