# Italy midfielder Tonali suspended for 10 months for illegal betting

Also fined 2,862 million won

[Sandro Tonali](https://totoblog.one/2023/08/mls-debut-messi-scores-in-first-game-9th/), a midfielder for Newcastle United in the English Premier League (EPL), has been banned for 10 months.

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) announced the punishment for Tonalli on its official website on Monday (Nov. 26), following a prosecution investigation into allegations of illegal betting.

Tonali has been suspended for 18 months and fined 20,000 euros (approximately $2,862). Eight of the 18 months have been suspended to a rehabilitation program, effectively banning him from lacing up his boots for 10 months. He will also have to complete a gambling treatment program during his suspension.

Tonali was recently investigated by Italian authorities for illegal betting alongside teammates [Niccolo Zaniolo](https://maps.google.ae/url?q=https%3A%2F%2F19guide03.com%2F) (Aston Villa) and Niccolo Pioli (Juventus).

He allegedly placed bets on AC Milan (Italy) matches in which he himself played. Tonali played for Milan from the 2020-2021 season until last season.

Tonali is a 2000-born prodigy who was touted as the next big thing in modern soccer, as he possesses all the attributes a midfielder needs: attacking, defending, and quick feet. However, his suspension will likely prevent him from reaching his full potential.

Red flags were raised for his club, Newcastle, and the Italian national team.

[Newcastle](http://www.kitaoka-group.com/pukiwiki/index.php?19guide031) spent €70 million on Tonali ahead of the season, and he was expected to be a starter. However, Tonali's suspension has left him unavailable.

The Italian national team will also not be able to use Tonalli at the UEFA European Football Championship (Euro 2024) in Germany next June.
