(mandarin version in progress)
Walking in Taipei is dangerous, because of cars and scooters. This is partially because cars and scooters often break the law without repercussion, but also because of bad road design. My project goal is to quickly make Taipei much safer for pedestrians.
My plan falls into three categories.
1. Data collection, organization, and presentation
2. Political engagement
3. Direct action
I'll give a quick explanation of the three categories.
Category 1 includes things like using open source traffic collision data to create heat maps that people can use to see how dangerous roads near their homes are. It also includes creating a method for people to report problem areas near them, that we can then go and document ourselves. Data collection could also simply be taking a video recording of walking on a pedestrian sidewalk to show how often cars come too close, too fast, or how often pedestrians are forced to walk into the road to get around illegally parked cars. This category also includes data presentation, which could take the form of maps, blog posts, instagram posts, or short form media like reels.
Category 2 involves pressuring the government to improve our pedestrian safety for us. Examples of this include using data we gather in category 1 to present to a local politician an area that needs to be improved. Because politicians won't act unless it benefits them, this category could also include petitions, letter-writing campaigns, phone-calling campaigns, and other strategies of making politicians feel like they should do their job.
Category 3 will be the most fun. Some fun and easy direct action could be simply putting out traffic cones near crosswalks to "calm" traffic (slow it down). We can also have "cone squads" that spend an afternoon in an area where cars commonly illegally park on pedestrian walkways, and then create "cone pathways" around the cars, creating a safe walkway for pedestrians and forcing the car to wait for us to let them drive away. I believe we can get some interesting social media content this way as well, which can feed into category 1.
For the hackathon, I would like to gather contact information of interested people, and add us to a g0v slack channel or line group to continue organizing our efforts. Depending on the skills of the interested people, we could begin work on a traffic incident heat map webapp, or, brainstorm direct action methods, or, brainstorm social media activity.
Please don't worry about my mandarin ability, we can work together to communicate, and we can always use google translate as a last resort.
