DPWH Bikeway Classification & OSM tag equivalency

*illustrations from 2012 DPWH Road Safety Manuals, and OSM wiki

In PH, type Ⅰ protected paths are rare. Type Ⅱ (on-road, delineated bike lanes) and type Ⅲ (on road, no bike lanes, cycling allowed) are in common use.

Class Ⅰ - Protected Paths

Draw geometries separately

OSM tag set

Carriageway: highway=*
Bike Path: highway=cycleway
Sidewalk: highway=footway + footway=sidewalk

Examples
Location Photo (*frame grab from YT)
Benigno Aquino Avenue bikeway, Iloilo City
SRP, Cebu City
Laguna Lake Highway (C6)
Davao City Coastal Road
North-bound bikeway segment near UPD, Commonwealth Avenue, QC

Class Ⅰ - Shared Use Path (Multi-use Path)

geometry is separate from highway

OSM tag set

Carriageway: highway=*
Shared path: highway=path + bicycle=yes + foot=yes + segregated=*

Examples
Location Photo (*frame grab from YT)
Marikina River Park
Marcos Highway, Marikina

Class Ⅱ Separated Bike Lane

On-road cycling. Sidewalk is separate
Sidewalk: highway=footway + footway=sidewalk
Carriageway: highway=* + cycleway:right=lane + cycleway:width=1.5 + cycleway:buffer=yes + cycleway:right:separation:left=bollard

Example

Class Ⅲ - Shared Roadway (with sharrows)

On-road cycling. Sidewalk is separate
Sidewalk: highway=footway + footway=sidewalk
Carriageway: highway=* + cycleway:both=shared_lane + cycleway:buffer=yes

OSM convention requires sharrows road markings to indicate that the travel lane is shared by bicycles and other vehicles.

Class Ⅲ - Shared Roadway (unmarked)

Carriageway: highway=* + bicycle=yes

Bikeway Treatments

  • cycleway:buffer:yes (optional)
  • cycleway:right:separation:left=bollard (optional, proposed tag)
  • cycleway:right:separation:right=kerb (optional, proposed tag)
