Proposals Notes

Objective of these proposals is to identify and build capacity for openWRT and Community Networks related maintenance and research support system. Each of these can become an activity over time that grows among the proximality of the CNs that participate. The proposals intend to compensate for the trainers time where needed and also to the associates of the CN team who show a long term potential of being attached. They effectively intend to establish a makerspace of sorts for CN and friends, a welcome space for hackathons and neighborhood colleges and techies to have a practice playground which helps replicate the CN idea in their circles. But firstly to catalyse each of the CN's capacity building activity.

Generally, we will have a list of available local routers (200$ to 1000$) and we (all proposal) expect to buy worth $1500 (max) which can be used in common for all our projects on all partner sides (Eric, Servelots ..). Guesstimate avg of $500 here (per proposal per CN).

COW Antenna Workshops

Antenna building related sessions have started between Pablo, Servelots and others. This proposal is built together regarding material, tools and sessions.
See https://pad.riseup.net/p/antenistxs-keep for break up and https://communitynetworks.group/t/antena-workshop-replication-in-india/786 for background.

dates: Aug 15 - Dec 31

Budget $3-4k

Training time: $ 1000 (2 x 100 x 5)
Trainer time and capacity building time human resources for a minimum of 5 sessions during the 5 months.

Build workshops: $ 1000
Building antennas based on the sessions, activity until the next session. Organising local workspaces and build activity among the (friends of) the CNs. 4 workshops at avg $250 per workshop.

Materials required: $ 1000
Estimated cost of the material and tools are listed in the pad. Our aim is to borrow or source locally where possible and we expect to limit the material cost at $1000 - this is for one CN (Servelots CN) in mind. If we have more CNs participating we will have to do some real-time co-planning. We will also have to buy/source, as needed, antennas from the market for comparitive analysis.

Expected outcomes:

  • Videos for local consumption, documents and antenna interest groups and forums.
  • Atleast 20 antennas (5GHz) that can be deployed.
  • Comparative analysis with antennas available in the market and those that come by default with the routers.

COW Herd Controls

https://communitynetworks.group/t/traffic-control-on-openwrt-and-libremesh/822

dates: Aug 15 - Dec 31 2022

Budget $2K

  • Training time. $ 500
    Training Amuza to other CNs (100x3 + 200 for CNs).
  • Time to work on the workshop. $ 1500
    • CN wide trainees and practice (500)
    • Hackathon on different OpenWRT routers (500)
    • public faceing workshop events to help bring focus to DIY trafic control for home routers and larger routers (500)

Build $1.5k
Co-create OpenWRT package(s) that provides access/traffic control mechanisms to network administrators.
Desired features of TC mechanisms

  • info on bandwidth consumption per user/device
  • limit duration of connectivity
  • limit/block access to web services
  • logging user activity to comply with local/relevant regulation frameworks
  • regulate speed of connectivity

Materials required. BYO-WRT

Opening up OpenWRT/LibreMesh

https://communitynetworks.group/t/openwrt-image-building/796

dates: Aug 15 - Dec 31

Training
Hackathon/Build
Documentation
Public facing demos/workshops (if budget permits)

Router Selection

  • Each CN picks 1 router each from the following categories that are not yet supported by LibreMesh
    • indoor dual band access point
    • outdoor access point
      (Suggested - one of them to be a mediatek chipset based router)

Training Session Ideas

  • How to add new board/router support to OpenWRT
    (AlterMundi team can do a workshop on how they ported OpenWRT or LibreMesh to LibreRouter - Ask San to be the trainer?)
  • How to build packages for OpenWRT
    ()
    (Example - How to publish Pirania as a package to OpenWRT)
  • How to customize UIs/landing pages for LibreMesh (OpenWRT)
  • How mesh happens in Libremesh

Hackathon / Build Ideas

  • CNs add LibreMesh support to the routers picked by them

Optional

  • All CNs come together to build a common landing page for the routers
  • Each CNs build their own mesh topology and then have mini,remote battlemesh of sorts

Budget Estimate for 3 participating CNs
$ 3300 (1000x3 per CN + 100x3 for trainers)
$ per CN breakdown
* $300 (100x3) for Training
* $400 (200x2) for Building
* $250 for purchasing routers
* $50 for misc

Training time. $600 (200x3 assuming 3 sessions)
Trainer per session - $ 100
Each participating CN per session - $ 100

Build time. $400 (200x2) per CN
Each CN contributing board support to LibreMesh
$200 per router

Materials required. $250 per CN
Each CN can procure 1 indoor router and 1 outdoor router with a total budget of $250

COW Cast App (cop 3 - services and content)

(this needs to be announced to other CNs and see who else would want this and want to work on this)

To develop phone app to recieve CN daily (media) broadcasts that are a program set by the community.

  • 1st stage, the media will be pulled from "Papad" api.
  • 2nd stage, can be made independent of Papad (if needed).
  • 3rd stage, Can add recording that can be requested for curation and broadcast.
  • 4th stage, 3rd party customization (like Maptales)

dates: Sept 15 - Jan 15

Budget $3K
Development time (1st/3rd stage). $ 2000
time to train and co-deploy workshop/sessions. $ 1000
