Organizing notes in HackMD just got a serious upgrade. Today we’re delighted to introduce you to Folders – a new way to organize and structure your workspace for easy navigation and management.
From day one, HackMD has built features to help both teams and individuals collaborate. Whether you’re juggling meeting notes, brainstorming ideas, or working on your next big project, Folders makes it easier than ever to keep everything streamlined and organized.
A cleaner, smarter workspace
Gone are the days of a long, scrolling list of notes. Now you can group related documents together (like projects, timeframes, or categories) for a cleaner, clutter-free workspace.
And tags can seamlessly integrate into your folder workflow. Use folders for broad categories (like “Team Resources” or “2025 Events”) and tags for more specific attributes (like “Design Doc,” “Meetings Notes,” or “Code Review”). This hybrid approach gives you multiple ways to categorize and find what you need, no matter how many documents you’re managing.
So say you’re part of a technical team using HackMD to manage product development. With Folders, you could organize your workspace like this:
- Create folders by project
- Add tags to specify different types of docs
Then, when it’s time for your weekly check-in, use the full-text search function enabled with your Prime account to pull up all notes tagged with “Meeting Notes” across any folder. Or, drill down into the project folder for a focused view of work in progress.
But you might be asking, how does Folders differ from Book Mode, a feature already available within HackMD? While both are used to organize and group notes, Book Mode allows you to easily group and view multiple notes within one document. It can be viewed both internally and externally, depending on permissions. The HackMD Tutorial is a good example of Book Mode in action. While with Folders, if you want to organize notes together, they don’t have to live in Book Mode. You now have multiple options for organizing your content.
Between tags, Book Mode, and Folders, you can keep the big picture clear, while still ensuring your team has quick access to the details.
Batch actions and personalization
Ready to tidy up your space? Select multiple notes at once for batch actions, like moving docs into a folder. We know you’ve written quite a few notes and organizing them now might feel a little overwhelming. That’s why we made sure to include the batch action functionality. So you can organize quickly and get back to building.
Once your notes are organized into folders, take it a step further by adding a little flair. Drag and drop folders in order of priority or customize folder icons with emojis to make your workspace feel uniquely you – all with the added bonus of making it even easier to find what you’re looking for.
