Cisco predicts that total internet traffic will reach 2.3 zettabytes by 2020, primarily driven by an increase in new internet users connecting. The majority of these new connections will occur in Asia, where 700 million new users will connect, and 238 million new users in Asia alone.
In response to this explosion of network traffic, service providers in Asia are turning to SDN/NFV to overcome network challenges of privacy, regulatory compliance and scalable deployments at a low cost and to transform their network infrastructure into a platform for service delivery.
The open CORD (Central Office Re-architected as a Datacenter) platform, led by ON.Lab/ONF, addresses these challenges by combining NFV, SDN, and the elasticity of commodity clouds to bring datacenter economics and cloud agility to the Central Office.
Built with best-in-class open source platforms including ONOS, Trellis, XOS, Docker and OpenStack, CORD provides a common, open platform for three critical domains of use: residential (R-CORD), enterprise (E-CORD) and mobile (M-CORD). Leveraging merchant silicon and white boxes, CORD is not only intended for servers and switches, but also for access (e.g., GPON, LTE/cellular).
