# Open Data / Open Government @ SummerSchool 2018, Stuttgart * Speakers: Philipp Zumstein, Oliver Rack * Date: 26.-28. July 2018 (Do-Sa) * Time: 9:00 - 17:00 * Room: i236 (second floor) * Language: en ## Abstract Open Data is data that everyone can access, use or share [[ODI](https://theodi.org/what-is-open-data)] and Open Data increasingly plays a role for achieving the post-2015 UN Sustainable Development Goals [[WB](https://blogs.worldbank.org/ic4d/new-report-how-open-data-can-drive-sustainable-development)]. The main obstacles to overcome in order to open data are legal and technical barriers, which will not allow reuse or make it on a technical level really hard because of the lack of interoperability. We see three main areas for Open Data: * Open Government Data * Open Data as part of Open Science * Open Cultural Data (e.g. catalog data, scans with OCRed texts, images) We will cover all three areas and discuss motivation for individual players especially libraries or [GLAM](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GLAM_(industry_sector)) institutions to produce Open Data as well as possible drawbacks. As a practical part we will look closer at the collaborative knowledge base Wikidata and make hands-on exercises about contributing as well as reusing data there. ## Schedule 1. **Thursday** * 09:00-10:30 -- [**Open Data**](https://hackmd.io/p/SJiixsuQm#/) * 10:30-11:00 -- :coffee: * 11:00-13:00 -- [**Group Work: Read, Discuss, Present**](https://hackmd.io/p/S1XVSdV4X#/) * 13:00-14:00 -- :hamburger: :tomato: * 14:00-15:30 -- [**Open Data in Libraries**](https://hackmd.io/p/SyTzBQFXm#/) * 15:30-16:00 -- :coffee: :watermelon: * 16:00-16:30 -- **Discussion** * 16:30 **Excursion to Public Library Stuttgart** :ticket: :light_rail: :books: 3. **Friday** * 09:00-10:30 -- **[Wikidata](https://hackmd.io/p/S1IQ59EVm#/): Introduction** * 10:30-11:00 -- :coffee: * 11:00-13:00 -- **Wikidata: Editing** * 13:00-14:00 -- :pizza: :tomato: * 14:00-14:45 -- **Wikidata: Querying** * 14:45-15:30 -- **[WikiCite](https://hackmd.io/p/H1IT3ov4Q#/)** * 15:30-16:00 -- :coffee: :watermelon: * 16:00-17:00 -- [**Supporting Digital Humanities with Open Data**](https://hackmd.io/p/Hy43OVYm7#/) 5. **Saturday** * 09:00-10:30 -- **Open Gov Data** * 10:30-11:00 -- :coffee: * 11:00-13:00 -- **Open Gov Data/Discussion/Use Case: Leisure Time Planer (introduction)** * 13:00-14:00 -- :pizza: :tomato: * 14:00-15:30 -- **Use Case: Leisure Time Planer (workshop time)** * 15:30-16:00 -- :coffee: * 16:00-17:00 -- **Feedback** <!-- ## Topics * **1.
