Application to "Request for Social Networks" ==== See [link here](https://www.requestforsocialnetworks.com/#form) **First Name** Zenna **Last Name** Fiscella **E-mail** zenna.fiscella@gmail.com **Country** Globally distributed - originated in New Zealand _____ ### Describe short (max 50 ch)** Scuttlebutt is a social network P2P platform started 4 years ago and based on its own protocol. It has grown drastically the last year and has generated a thriving community of about 5000 members. The community is strong, working both on developing the plattform and discussing all from every day life to #solarpunk. SSB provides the storage and encryption foundation for building decentralized social applications. - [x] How many members are there on ScuttleButt? - [x] Is there a charted/logged growth curve? - [x] How long has ScuttleButt existed? ### In a few sentences, tell us more about what you’re going to build or are already working on: Already under development and with a thriving community Scuttlebutt is a social platform based on the distributed protocol SSB (SecureScuttleButt) and provides Patchwork, Patchfoo and Patchbay apps as an interfaces. SSB has come far but there are a few things left to solve. This is where Blockstack fits in perfectly. SSB is well suited for offline use cases, but has nothing equivalent to a global directory of names. This means that there is no way to identify a user beyond their locally generated ID. Blockstack's has a strong feature of a decentralized alternative to DNS, when integrated with SSB, Blockstack would allow for friends to easily discover each other. A simple integration would be the implementation of two-way verified names on Blockstack that link to SSB feeds. We can implement a schema for this on the Blockstack side and the SSB side. We see this as a strong use-case with potential for a new global structure of decentralized social networks. This integration can be a starting point and we're excited to see where it goes! ______ With the growth of Scuttlebutt there has also developed an intricate and effective structure of “micro-grants” within the community. This system is implemented by the community and core developers for Scuttlebutt. Some examples of other ongoing development projects: #mmmmm - A mobile interface for ScuttleButt by @andrestaltz A mobile SSB client, initial development for Android. Alpha 0.0.13 was released on May 4th and Beta is due in June. Can be downloaded via the DAT installer. See more at: https://github.com/staltz/mmmmm-mobile and https://github.com/staltz/dat-installer Local Community Onboarding by @luandro A push to make the ScuttleButt ecosystem more inclusive for local communities around the globe by paving the road with easy to deploy mesh network kits as well as making SSB friendlier for non-devs and non-english speakers. TickTack Ticktack is an interface for SSB which engages with the same community but through a different interface. Ticktack allows the user to engage with SSB as a blog posting plattform. www.ticktack.im For all the applications which have been built see: https://www.scuttlebutt.nz/applications.html ### Tell us a bit about you and your team’s background (ex: work experience, previous projects, past education) For this I would need some more info, personal descriptions and who should be listed, we would need two more I’d say. Dominic Tarr @dominic Scuttlebutt was created by Dominic Tarr, a Node.js developer with more than 600 modules published on npm and who lives on a self-steering sailboat in New Zealand. It is here, from the need for offline connection with the outside word, ScuttleButt emerged. https://github.com/dominictarr https://twitter.com/dominictarr André Staltz @andrestaltz André has become a prominent community member and contributor to Scuttlebutt. He has worked as an independent contractor, programming instructor, speaker, and donation-based open source developer and as a Senior Web and Mobile Developer at Futurice. He has authored the Cycle.js framework, and have been a core contributor to RxJS. https://staltz.com/ Charles E. Lehner @cel Charles builds and maintains applications on Secure Scuttlebutt, with a focus on integrating external systems and protocols into the platform; current projects include git-ssb, ssb-npm-registry, and patchfoo. He holds a B.S. in Computer Science from University of Rochester. https://celehner.com/ Zenna Fiscella @zelf Zenna writes and coordinates application for, SSB and makerspaces. Having worked for 7 years with FabLabs and digital fabrication she is embedded in the maker movement and strongly passionate for a new horizontal structure of society. www.zelf.me - [x] We need at least two one more people - [x] The CV / "highlights" from these ### Do you have a url? www.scuttlebutt.nz ### Do you have any questions for us? - [x] Do we have any questions? Do you need a budget and when is the due date? _______ **To Discuss/Add:** ==== - [x] We need at least two more people, who? Suggestion for people: Cel + Zenna~~ - [x] The CV / "highlights" from these Cel will send to Zenna - [x] Do we have any questions for them? Our main issue was in regards to how connected our application needs to be to blockstack specifically. Dominic will connect Zenna and ppl from Blockstack - [x] Do we want to add more projects? Well, Patchwork obviously. Also TickTack because it looks crispy and juicy. we can link to the dev diary meta-thread in case they want to explore: [here](ssb.mikey.nz:8807/%259psz2xPwGhGG7mIkTIgCEy%2FxX7r6uQDNQyjl0Nopiw4%3D.sha256) You could probably mention git-ssb and ssb-npm because that's some seriously awesome dogfooding  - [x] Who would you like as representative for the application? Suggestions for representatives: * mikey * Dan * andre * zenna **General Questions:** - [x] How many members are there on ScuttleButt? This will always be a difficult number to measure, it'll have to be through statistical census in the future. The exact number will always be impossible to measure because of decentralization. Right now I think we're in the range of a few thousand, maybe ~5 thousand? The way I know this is that you can check the number of ids in your local database and extrapolate a bit. I know e.g. that Dominic has 1000+ followers on SSB, and I'd suppose most people would follow him. So SSB is at least 1000 or so, but probably a bit higher, so I'd say thousands. - [x] Is there a charted/logged growth curve? https://celehner.com/ssbc/stats/daily.html But remember, this only reflects a portion of the whole SSB community. - [x] How long has ScuttleButt existed?
