# Getting started with Defi Kingdoms

Defi Kingdoms (DFK) is probably the most enjoyable way to get started with defi right now. In just a few months, it's risen to become the [#2 crypto game by TVL](https://dappradar.com/rankings/category/games) behind Axie Infinity.

At its core is a standard Uniswap V2 decentralized exchange (DEX) on the [Harmony One](https://www.harmony.one/) chain (another L1). The twist is that they gameify the traditional defi actions into fun little RPG experience complete with pixel art. 

- Swapping tokens is now trading at the "marketplace".
- Providing liquidity to pools and farming is "planting seeds at the garden" that you can harvest in the future.
- You can stake the project's token, $JEWEL, at the "bank" to get $xJEWEL, a yield-bearing asset à la xSUSHI.

But the most exciting part are heros, which are NFT characters with actual utility in the game.

You can summon (mint) or trade heros, and they come with different stats, classes, and professions. You can then take heros to earn in-game items (to use or sell) by completeing various quests. The game is still early in the development roadmap, so the quest options at the moment are a bit limited.

## Getting started

I use Coinbase as my main CEX. Unfortunately, Coinbase doesn't support buy $ONE (the native token for Harmony), so I had to use a different CEX. I had a smooth experience with crypto.com (also known as CDC), here are the steps I followed.

- Downloaded the [mobile app on iOS](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/id1262148500), did KYC with my driver's license. I was verified in < 1 hour.
- Bought 1,000 ONE (~$200 USD) and withdrew it to my MetaMask address.
    - Make sure you use your Harmony "one..."" address instead of the "0x..." address when you withdraw. You can convert between the two quickly by going to your account on the [explorer](https://explorer.harmony.one/) and click on "Harmony" for the address style.

- Start playing at game.defikingdoms.com! First thing to do is probably swap some ONE to JWL to check out the different functionalities.
