In a country where officials of such rank are prohibited from any additional earnings, such figures sound like a challenge to the system. But it becomes even louder when it concerns Azam Baki – the man who for years headed the fight against corruption. He publicly accused, investigated, and secured arrests. And now, it is his own bank statements that have ended up in the spotlight. The further investigation took a completely unexpected turn: Azam Baki received the RM20 million not through bribes, and not through offshore accounts, but through... legal instruments.

How the investigation began: a chance discovery by auditors

The official faces a fine of up to one million ringgit, dismissal from his post, and potentially criminal charges.
