# Panel Proposes Doubling PM Kisan Nidhi and Establishing Labor Commission
A parliamentary panel has recently suggested significant changes to agricultural policies in India. One of the key recommendations is to double the annual financial assistance provided under the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme. This scheme currently provides ₹6,000 per year to eligible farmers, and the panel has proposed increasing this amount to ₹12,000.

The panel has also emphasized the need to acknowledge the crucial role of agricultural laborers in the sector. To this end, they have recommended renaming the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare to include "Farm Labourers Welfare" in its title. Furthermore, they have strongly advocated for the establishment of a National Commission for Minimum Living Wages for Farm Labourers. This commission would be responsible for ensuring fair wages and improved working conditions for this often-overlooked segment of the agricultural workforce.

These recommendations were part of a report on Demands for Grants (2024-25) presented by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Food Processing. The panel believes that these measures will not only provide much-needed financial support to farmers but also address the long-pending issues faced by agricultural laborers, promoting a more inclusive and equitable agricultural sector in India.
