# 22,956 Second Appeals Pending in CIC: Centre Tells Parliament

New Delhi, Dec 12 (PTI) - As of November 29, 2024, a total of 22,956 second appeals and complaints were pending before the Central Information Commission (CIC), the government informed Parliament on Thursday. Union Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh revealed in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha that the total number of second appeals and complaints filed with the CIC from 2021-22 to 2023-24 was 59,069. Additionally, the CIC returned 36,787 second appeals and complaints during the same period.

Regarding vacancies in the transparency watchdog, Singh stated that the CIC currently comprises the Chief Information Commissioner and two Information Commissioners. Section 12(2) of the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005, stipulates that the CIC should consist of the Chief Information Commissioner and up to 10 Central Information Commissioners. The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) invited applications for up to eight Information Commissioner positions on August 14, 2024, receiving 161 applications by the deadline.
