# WEEK 1 > GEN Z DOESN'T KNOW A WORLD WITHOUT FAST FASHION ## Vocabulary ### `1. campaign 運動` - (n.) a series of planned activities that are intended to achieve a social, commercial or political aim - (v.) to take part in or lead a such activity - examples: *a campaign for parliamentary reform* *we have campaigned against whaling for the last 15 years* :::success **common collocations** - ~ **for/against** (for both noun and verb) - a **intensive/fierce/strong** ~ - to **launch/mount/start/lead/be engaged in** a ~ - to **conduct/organize/run** a ~ ::: :::info **synonyms** words for an effort made **to achieve a goal** - battle / struggle / drive / war / fight **battle and struggle** are more used to express a tendency to **win** sth **war and fights** are to **stop and prevent** sth - exmaples: *battle for independence 獨立之爭 go on an economy drive 進行節約運動 fight against compulsory redundancies 對強制裁員的鬥爭* ::: ### `2. thrift 節儉/二手店` - (n.) the careful use of money, especially by avoiding waste - (n.) in modern time, it is shorterned for ***thrift shop*** - examples: *Savings banks and cooperatives spread new ideals about independence and thrift.* *Im going to the thrift to get a clutch.* `sym` **thrifty** (adj.) careful about spending money and not wasting things **frugal** (adj.) using only as much money or food as is necessary `opp` **extravagant** (adj) spending a lot more money or using a lot more of sth than you can afford or then is ### `3. loom 緩緩逼近` - (v.) to appear as a large shape that is not clear, espcially in a frightening or threatening way - examples: *the crisis looming Gen Z grew up under the looming threat of climate change* `phr` **loom large** to be worrying or frightening and seem hard to avoid *e.g. The prospect of war loomed large.* ### `4. rick-and-mortar 實體店` - (adj.) existing as a physical building, **especially a shop**, rather than doing business only on the internet - examples: *a rick-and-mortar retailer rick-and mortar bookstores are disappearing nowadays* ### `5. bulk 主體` - (n.) the main part of sth; most of sth - examples: *the bulk of the populaion lives in cities* `phr` **bulk up** to make sth bigger, thicker or heavier *e.g. Retailers invest in technologies to bulk up their business portfolio.* (擴大生產線) **in bulk** to handle sth with large amount at a time *e.g. Buying groceries in bulk is usually cheaper.* ### `6. demographic 族群` - (n.) data relating to the population and different groups within it - (n.) a section of the population who are of a similar age, the same sex, etc. - examples: *the demographics of radio listeners members of this demographic were born between the years 1997 and 2010*
