# The Badger Game
The Badger Game is a small city-builder where you grow a badger continent by placing buildings, balancing resources, and surviving population growth.
Play it now at <https://willyblah.github.io/badger/>.
## Goal
There is no win condition. The game is about building a stable economy that can support more people and badgers. The main challenge is keeping your world alive while the population keeps growing.
## What You Start With
- 2 people
- 30 metals
- 15 electronics
The map is a 35x18 grid. Most tiles are empty, but some special natural stuff appear randomly:
- Badger skin deposit
- Metal deposit
- Water
These natural tiles matter because some buildings must be placed next to them.
## Core Loop
Every minute, your continent gains resources.
Every five minutes, population grows by 50%.
You can also use speed boosts, obtained using badgercoins, to speed up your game.
## Stats and Resources
The right panel shows the current state of your continent.
**Main materials**
- Metals
- Badger skin
- Electronics
Indicators like `20 (+5)` means you currently have 20, and you gain 5 every production cycle.
**Resources to be consumed**
- Power
- Water
- Food
## Building Costs
Buildings can cost:
- Metals
- Badger skin
- Electronics
- Perhaps even people
They might use:
- Power
- Water
- Work places
If you cannot afford a building, it will flash red.
## Placement Rules
You can only place buildings where there is nothing.
Some buildings have to be adjacent to a natural resource deposit in order to extract that resource. Adjacency can include diagonals.
## Shop Overview
### Life Support
This tab gives you infrastructure for power and water generation. Make sure you have enough power and water before building things.
### Production
This tab helps you gain resources:
- Badger skin
- Metal
- Electronics
- Large combined extractions
This is where your long-term scaling comes from.
### Housing
This tab increases the number of homes and often happiness. If population exceeds housing by more than 2, you start losing happiness every production cycle.
### Work & Fun
This tab covers:
- Food production
- Happy buildings
- Money buildings
Food is critical. If food falls behind population, starvation and deaths will occur.
## Wild Badgers
Some map tiles contain wild badgers. Clicking one gives you two options:
- Adopt badger: gain one badger and one happiness
- Kill badger: gain 5-10 badgercoins (random)
Adopted badgers can work for you without costing food and housing, which makes them valuable for worker-heavy builds.
Important note: you can only interact with a wild badger once per production cycle.
## Trade
The trade menu lets you buy or sell resources. It's useful for fixing short-term shortages, recovering from a bad start, and converting one resource into another.
## Saving and Opening Games
- `Save` stores a world in the browser's storage. Remember to save a newly created world, or you'll lose progress!
- `Open` loads a previously saved world.
- The game autosaves the world you're currently playing.
## The Future of The Badger Game
Living in one's own world is constrained. In the future, all players' continents will be accessible in a large world map. You can visit others' worlds, fight with them, and play with cute badgers.
War will be a major part of future updates. Let's see who can dominate the badger world!
