# Upcoming important dates for European Climate Movements ## Timeline ## 12 November CEE Strategy Call prior to the Dec. EUCO ==Organised by Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe== > It’s hard to understate the importance of the Central and Eastern European countries (CEE) when it comes to EU climate policy. Specifically, when it comes to the European Council which is where the 2030 target will be decided, some of these countries have had a tendency to block decisions in EUCO on climate. The next EUCO will take place on 10-11 December and it will be crucial for deciding on the level of the 2030 EU climate target. All countries need to agree (unanimity), so we need to get everyone on board! (To be clear, by CEE here we mean Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Bulgaria - also known as Visegrad 4+2). >Now, together with colleagues, both CAN Europe Members, Partners and others who are working in the region, we would like to invite you to a special call for anyone in CEE countries who would like to discuss the political state of play, projects and actions towards the December EUCO! Hoping for contributions from as many of you as possible from the region. And do not hesitate to invite friends and contacts from the CEE (and, of course if you are interested but don’t live in CEE, you are still welcome to register and listen! J )! **Time:** next Thursday, 12 November, 18.00-19.00 **Link to register:** https://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJArcemuqT4oGNeQFYb-um-iOs-y26_F7-Oe ## 27-28 November - European Strategy Conference ==Organised by by2020== > As we’ve announced, By2020WeRiseUp will conclude towards the end of this year (https://by2020weriseup.net/en/ending-the-campaign/) and this European strategy conference will be the last one we’ll organise. While part of this conference is going to evaluate what happened in regards to coordinating climate justice action over the past months and years, the focus of the conference will be to look ahead. To look ahead at climate action in 2021, to look ahead at coordination beyond the By2020-platform, and generally to look ahead at how we can all keep supporting each other. We’d like to conclude the By2020-campaign by beginning a conversation about the future of collaboration in the European Climate Justice movement and a direction of travel to get it started. > The conference will take place in an online format on the afternoon of Friday, the 27th and on Saturday, the 28th of November (we’ll make sure to include plenty of breaks and mix up working modes). Please register until the 22nd of November: https://www.ende-gelaende.org/en/by2020weriseup/ ## 10-11 December - European Council meeting (EuCo) ### Why it's important? * Decition on 2030 target (upping emissions reduction of 40% to 60%) * Decition on excluding fossil fuels from covid recovery funds ### What action you can join? For the international mobilisation, the International Working Group from Ende Gelände invites you all to join an online meeting on the 15th of November, at 18:00 (CET): * BBB-room: https://conference.sixtopia.net/b/koo-ap4-rn4 * Pad: https://cryptpad.fr/pad/#/2/pad/edit/NF3ON63n9vn5GQYYc5rmYIVp/ Please feel free to spread the word. Love and rage By2020 --------------------------------------------------- *Call to Action – 5 years of Paris agreement* This December 12th the Climate Paris Agreement will turn five years old, but unlikely any other anniversary, we have absolutely no reason to celebrate. After all the insufficient pledges and empty promises to curb global emissions, stop global warming, and help countries in the global South to deal with the mess that the western countries created in the first place, we are just heading faster into the abysm. The world is completely off-track to limit global temperature to 1.5 ºC by the end of the century to prevent runaway climate change, and GHG concentrations are reaching new high levels. Unprecedented wildfires, droughts, floods and hurricanes have become the new normal. And if that wasn’t enough, the world is dealing with the consequences of uncontrolled environmental destruction: the covid-19 pandemic. At the same time, global inequality levels are just going through the roof. All of this has happened while the climate movement protests have become bigger and bigger. We went to the streets to peacefully demand climate justice, but things have hardly changed, we have been ignored. All we get are deficient policies opening the door to the global economic elite to green-wash our societies and continue business-as-usual. The recent negotiation of the Common Agricultural Policy in the EU has shown that. The inaction of the German Green Party in stopping the construction of a motorway that will destroy the Dannenröder forest has shown that. And the list is long. On December 12th , we want the climate justice movement to come together to mark the failure of our institutions and their empty agreements. We need to show them that we will take the matter of climate justice into our own hands and use our bodies to draw the line to their destructive and exploitative economic model. On the fifth anniversary of the Paris agreement we have nothing to celebrate, but we call on all our comrades to join us in our struggle for climate justice! _Types of action_ * Decentralised civil disobedience actions (e.g. blockades) across Europe, ideally in small groups of people * Actions can also be relatively symbolic e.g. a small blockade with bicycles in front of the entrance of a power plant * Demonstrations with the participation of NGOs, civil society groups, etc. For instances, in Germany, there is the idea of having an Online Live-Stream with speeches not from organizations but only from people from the global south talking about their struggles being already effected by climate change and what the failure of the governments to prevent 1.5 C° means for them and their fight against corporations. The decentralised demonstrations would be – just as with the Hanau-Memorial – just as many places as possible to transfer the live-stream via video or just audio. The goal would be to have more small (could be just 3-5 ppl) manifestations than ever at the same time in as many places as possible. _Time frame_ * Two days of action on December 11th and 12th. _Preparation of International Mobilisation_ * On November 5th in the European Strategy Call (By2020): Kick-off of the mobilisation. Agreement on the need of a common narrative and key messages, as well as social media mobilisation campaign (with common hashtags) * *15th of November (Sunday): *First (online) strategic meeting * Last week of November: Final (online) strategic meeting --- ### ==From Climate Action Network== #### Invitation to the CEE Strategy Call prior to the Dec.
