# Geneneral Education Requirements
1) What is IGETC?
2) What is CSUGE
3) PDF files that outline IGETC and CSUGE
---
The Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) and the California State University General Education (CSUGE) Breadth are two distinct sets of general education requirements for community college students in California who plan to transfer to a four-year university. Here are the key differences and considerations for choosing one over the other:
### 1) IGETC (Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum)
**Purpose:**
- Designed for students who plan to transfer to either the University of California (UC) or California State University (CSU) systems.
**Structure:**
- IGETC includes courses from six categories:
- English Communication,
- Mathematical Concepts and Quantitative Reasoning,
- Arts and Humanities, Social and Behavioral Sciences,
- Physical and Biological Sciences,
- Language Other Than English.
- Some UCs, especially more competitive ones, have additional requirements or recommendations beyond IGETC.
- The Language Other Than English requirement can be met by completing two years of high school language or one semester of a college-level language.
**Advantages:**
- Flexibility to transfer to both UC and CSU schools.
- Can be a good option if you're unsure whether you'll transfer to a UC or CSU.
- Fulfills lower-division general education requirements for most UC and CSU campuses.
**Disadvantages:**
- Not all majors accept IGETC (especially in the UC system). For instance, STEM majors may have additional or different requirements.
---
### 2) CSUGE (California State University General Education)
**Purpose:**
- Specifically designed for students who plan to transfer to a CSU campus.
**Structure:**
- CSUGE includes courses from five categories: English Communication, Mathematics/Quantitative Reasoning, Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, Lifelong Understanding and Self-Development, and Physical and Biological Sciences.
- There is no foreign language requirement.
**Advantages:**
- Tailored for students targeting CSU campuses, ensuring all general education requirements for CSU are met.
- No foreign language requirement, which might be preferable for students who find language courses challenging or unnecessary for their major.
**Disadvantages:**
- Limits flexibility if you decide to apply to a UC campus later, as it may not meet all UC general education requirements.
### Why Choose One Over the Other?
**Choose IGETC if:**
- You are considering applying to both UC and CSU campuses and want to keep your options open.
- You are comfortable meeting the foreign language requirement.
- Your intended major does not have specific general education requirements that conflict with IGETC.
**Choose CSUGE if:**
- You are certain you want to transfer to a CSU campus.
- You prefer not to take a foreign language course.
- Your major is well-aligned with the CSU general education requirements.
### Final Considerations
- **Major Requirements:** Always check the specific requirements for your intended major at your target universities, as some majors (especially in STEM) have specific course requirements that might influence your choice between IGETC and CSUGE.
- **Advising:** Consult with a community college counselor to ensure you are on the right track for your target universities and majors.
- **Flexibility:** If you’re unsure about your transfer destination, IGETC might provide more flexibility.
Understanding your academic and career goals can help you decide which general education path is best for you.
