# State Of The Art Research ## Lesson-Education: A Learning Management tool for Students in Low-Internet Environments ### [Eneza Education](https://enezaeducation.com/) - [competitive] submitter: Manzi Bryan ![](https://i.imgur.com/bk2TzKY.jpg) Eneza Education is a platform for Kenyan primary school students to access quizzes, wikipedia, and various dictionaries *via SMS*. They even have a novel "Ask a teacher" feature. We will need to investigate how successful Eneza has been and the bottlenecks they have encountered since they have not expanded into the whole continent. ### [Moringa School](https://moringaschool.com) | [competitive] submitter: Manzi Bryan ![Students in Classs](https://i.imgur.com/88Ppmuf.jpg) Moringa School is "Kenya's best coding bootcamp" it brings together promising students and teaches them how to code in an intensive, fast-paced 4-month introduction to programming. On the one hand, Moringa is different from what we want to create: it is a bootcamp and we want to create a learning management system. However, Moringa is known for delivering a lot of high quality information in a very short time. As a result, we are interested in Moringa because they have such good educational outcomes which we want to emulate as well. ### [Smart Phone Based E-Learning](https://www.scitepress.org/Papers/2011/33349/33349.pdf) | [method] Manzi Bryan This paper aims to answer a question very similar to our own: how could we create an e-learning solution for children who attend school intermittently in Africa. The writers evaluated both text and voice-based solutions and conducted surveys to find out user's feelings. While they did not test their platform with actual rural-area school children, they have a useful comparison of voice-vs-text based learning. ### [Internet Going Mobile!](http://pdfs.semanticscholar.org/f6f3/508d250ab1c63216929a217de21a9f34a517.pdf) | [market] submitter: Manzi Bryan This is a short document which tells us a lot of information about smartphone/laptop usage in Africa. Understanding how and why people use different devices will be essential for our product. ### [Towards an Optimization Framework for E-Learning in Developing Countries: A Case of Private Universities in Kenya](http://jcsitnet.com/journals/jcsit/Vol_2_No_2_June_2014/9.pdf) | [background] submitter: Manzi Bryan This is a paper on existing E-learning tools used in Kenyan universities. The writers create metrics that define different E-learning platforms and conducted a large survey to determine which tools were the most useful and what made them valuable. Their data will be helpful as we decide the priorities for what we build first. # State Of The Art Research ## Your Problem Topic ### Khan Academy App | competitive & market [Khan academy blog](https://blog.khanacademy.org/khan-academy-in-your-pocket-new-apps-available/) submitter: Abubakar Kasule ![](https://i.imgur.com/WZLlOlc.png) The Khan academy app is currently one of the leading mobile education apps. This is not surprising because Khan Academy is the biggest free online education platform. What is surprising is that, according to the linked blog post, 30% of regular Khan Academy users tune-in from their phones. I think that the high percentage of mobile users on an educational platform designed for laptop/tablets is an indication of the potential viability of a natively mobile educational platform. ### Source Name | [method|competitive|market|background] [link name](http://link/to/source) submitter: your name *image if applicable* how it relates # State Of The Art Research ## Lesson-Education: A Learning Management tool for Students in Low-Internet Environments ### [Whatsapp Education](https://www.erudit.org/en/journals/irrodl/1900-v1-n1-irrodl03381/1042963ar.pdf) - [paper] Submitter: Louis Murerwa ![](https://t3n9sm.c2.acecdn.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/WhatsApp-Encryption.jpg) This paper studies the impact of WhatsApp use in the education process. The study supports of our hyphothesis that using a mobile app to support the traditional education environment can lead to success. The analysis made by the reseachers showed that students developed positive opinions towards the use of WhatsApp in their courses. Students demanded the same practice in their other courses as well. They reported that learning could also take place unconsciously and the messages with images were more effective for their learning. This studey is evident to the need of an eduction mobile app in the African region. ### [Online Learning](https://www.universityworldnews.com/post.php?story=20200422075107312) | [news] Submitter: Louis Murerwa University student bodies in Ghana ,Zimbabwe and South Africa say e-learning is unaffordable and elitist. The student bodies cited the current iteration of online education was challenging because students had limited access to internet and electricty. In South Africa, the South African Students Congress (SASCO) called for a national boycott of online learning, arguing that it is not equally available to all students. This news article serves as evidence to the limitations of online education. ### [Mobile Penetration](https://www.un.org/africarenewal/magazine/may-2013/africa%E2%80%99s-mobile-youth-drive-change#:~:text=The%20World%20Bank%20and%20African,or%20electricity%2C%20the%20agencies%20add.) | [method] Louis Murerwa This document tells us about mobile penetration on the African continent. World Bank and African Development Bank report there are 650 million mobile users in Africa, surpassing the number in the United States or Europe. In some African countries more people have access to a mobile phone than to clean water, a bank account or electricity, the agencies add. This paper shows us that a mobile solution is needed for this region. ### [Internet Going Mobile!](https://canvas.dartmouth.edu) | [competitor] Submitter: Louis Murerwa Canvas is one of the leading online education apps.
