# 畢業生該如何準備研究員作品集 #版聚筆記 ###### tags: `版聚筆記` Albert, 10年經驗, LinkedIn Joanne, Uber UX researcher 2018年來美唸書(Michigan State), 18年底海投19年暑期實習機會(coinbase, uber, insurance company, chose uber), 從uber實習轉正職 找實習時有4個case study, 2 foundational research (paper publication), self-project (scooter safety, driver behaviors). 當初進Uber外文系的背景有加分, 在uber實習時的project是跟voice UX有關. 與coinbase面試時有特別做一個coinbase app usability critique Gale, UX researcher at Microsoft, previously developer research at Google U Mich, 有實習經驗, 設計師轉研究員 從network進Google做產品2年 (contractor) 用6個projects找第一份工作, 找微軟工作時, 履歷跟網站主要是用來拿第一關, 由於有coding experience, personal brand是technical background Darren, UX researcher at Google (Google Ads), previously at ebay 有景觀設計的背景,4個實習/contractor,學生最缺的是實戰經驗(另一個加分點是academic research),personal brand: emerging market. 第一份工作是在eBay幫中國及印度發展市場. * **定位清楚**是拿到電話面試的關鍵, 特別是對大公司而言(Darren) * 看到機會**3天內**投聽到回音的機率高(Joanne) * **Networking很重要**, 是拿到面試機會的關鍵之一(Darren) * 找教授認識的 * LinkedIn * Slack channels * Research-focused groups * 研究員著重內省及同理心, 也要考慮適當的business goal + product visibility(一個成熟的產品是兼顧business & users) * Mid-level researchers會注重next steps (research, product roadmap, strategic thinking and etc) **常見面試問題:** * How do you communicate research? * How do you evangelize research? * How do you research if you only have 3 days? * How do you react if you don't get buy-ins from your stakeholders? * Need to know the trade-off between different research methods * 可以先準備好powerpoint (相關資料、圖片等), 如果被問到可以自己看或是秀給對方看 # Research presentation作品集 **Tips:** * Research portfolio website可以high-level就好 * Memory dump after each project, weekly/monthly reflection以記錄中間的細節與outcome (如何跟別人合作、如何解決問題) * Reflection after each stage (planning, interview, synthesis), what challenges? how to overcome it? If not, how can I do it next time? **Joanne:** 1. About me (How I got to UX Research, Scope (evaluate, generative, exploratiry) & Surface (mobile, web), methodology 2. Background 3. Research questions 4. Research methodology (why this one but not others?) 5. Timeline, participant profile 6. Insight 7. Recommendation 8. Overall impact (to product and organization) **Darren:** 1. Personal background/introduction (Past experience, what input can I bring to my next team? Personal brand: International research, communication...backed with examples in case study) 2. business組織的goal & vision, 以及其如何影響team project and my research goal 3. Roadmap of my research projects over the years 4. project的第一個slide開宗明義講overview, result, impact 5. 其餘的步驟與Joanne雷同 6. 最後的一個slide專注communication skill (How to communicate in different stages? How to loop in research in every step?) **Gale:** 從memory dump/reflection挑選合適的case講, 一切全部都要連在一起 (business goal, insight, implementation) # Q&A: **Q: 設計師想轉研究員如何寫作品集?** A: 強調研究經過及結果, finding如何inform design decision, 專注講researcher角色如何與其他團隊成員合作, 可從四個角度triangulate研究 (qualitative vs quantitative, attitudinal vs behavioral, user vs expert, first hand vs secondary) Q: 如何撰寫NDA projects? A: 如果已上市,可以考慮, 名字改掉, 設計修改. 問manager + conditions, 做內容的調整, 分享給stakeholder/manager問可否OK Q: 研究員如果在不同的階段參與同一個project要怎麼講? A: 可以從high level先講involvement. 可以分開成兩個projects, 然後連結在一起 Q: 設計師如何跟研究員及PM合作? * Project prioritization (每3-6個月找PM/designers開會了解product跟features的方向, 新興市場或是成熟市場等), bandwidth, 與別的researchers討論, 設計師可以觀察研究員怎麼moderate session, debrief * 研究員可以coach designers做簡單的研究,轉成顧問的角色, 給template, 改research study plan draft, 幫忙pilot interview or moderate a session as an example * 研究員可以參加design critique * Quarterly cross-functional team planning, researcher + designers通常是偏user的角色, 研究員可以幫忙designers advocate for users with past research findings * Host workshops to evangelize UX research (Zillow的UX research是discovery phase...最成熟UX research階段) Q: How to get research buy-ins? A: (Darren) Excel sheet轉譯finding至features 找PM, design team, engineer team做1對1的開會,請他們evaluate P0 to P2來看哪些features會被prioritize,同時可以讓stakeholders感受自己有被重視,findings也容易被接受或考慮 (Gale) Foundational research先跟有決定權的人聊聊, 比較能做到符合未來大方向的研究 Research infrastructure (continuously collect user feedback), research library organization Q: 比較小的features如果找不到user做研究,要怎麼辦? A: 可以找最常跟這個user互動的人研究 (Uber business, 找內部sales訪談,因為他們最了解end users) Buyer user research vs operator user research, 不同階段的顧客有不同levels的biases
