### How we funded an art performance to send hair to the stratosphere using blockchain

To the Moon… To the Flow is a performance art project.​

Filippos Vasileiou, having grown his hair for 7 years, will cut it off and send it to the stratosphere on a helium weather balloon. Along with him, a group of performers will also offer a lock of their own hair. A team of participating artists and collaborators contribute to the creative & technical aspects of the performance​

Filippos had the idea to do an art project whose outcome was uncertain. The idea occured to submit the proposal to the TrojanDAO for funding.

### Paragraph on the artistic concept:

Hair are a part of my head that grows with me.
They grow relatively faster than aything else on my body.
They move more than me.
As if they are unconcious, I can, if I want, cut them without hurting.
As if my head was a can throwing hairs.
As if my mind turns into hairs anything that is not needed, but they don't fall out.
As if they were antennas helping in coordination.
If my body is the city "polis", my heair is the Acropolis.
Its the last point that joins my body with the sky.
If my hair is my body then I can send it to many places.

I have chosen to let my hair grow for 7 years. For 7 years I share the same space with my hair.
A cleansing, a rebirth or just a bet with myself?
I will cut off part of my head and I will send it to the sky.

The act itself isn't so important, neither are hairs important.
The dedication and seriousness that I deal with them are what give them a special meaning to me.

For me this event has comparable importance with the launching of a rocket to the moon, with the opening ceremoly of the olympic games, with the fireworks on new year, with the falling of a cork into the sea from the rod of a fisherman.

“To the moon” is a phrase used by traders. Those who invest in crypto, nfts, stocks etc. and they hope that the price will rise so that they can earn money. Most of the time without knowing or caring about a project nor the process, work and purpose. The phrase I like instead is "To the flow"… embracing what is around us and working with that, no matter how insignificant it may seem. The point is to follow what I love and go with the flow until I meet it or lose it. After all, it’s the process that matters, the journey. - F.V.

### Telling the story of the project:

We discussed how the project can be an experiment to use blockchain as much as possible to be funded and autonomusly managed. Connecting blockchain and IRL, ephemeral art (performance) with blockchain infrastructure (stored forever on-chain).

How to open the project so that there is a degree co-ownership and co-creation. Initially Group of Participating artists, collaborators on the technical side of the flight, sound artist and video. To produce autonomusly, out in the open, on the terms defined by the creator and his team, to reward contributors ( without the usual institutional funding)

When it was ready, after initial feedback rounds and discussions, Filippos submitted the proposal to Trojan DAO to be voted on on-chain.

Trojan DAO is a Moloch fork. Only DAO members are able to submit proposals to the DAO. Filippos is a member of the DAO so he is able to submit the proposal for a grant. Grantee projects and Working Groups can have DAO and non-DAO members and are advised to set up a Gnosis Multisig to manage and distribute the grant funding they receive from the DAO.

## (Pre)launch - August 12

This was supposed to be the launch day. We gathered at the launch site, but some things didn't quite work the way they were planned. Very windy.


The weather balloon broke off and flew "to the moon" leaving the payload and systems behind. Thankfully before Filippos had a chance to start to cut his hair. Risking losing everything is part of the concept of To The Moon..To The Flow anyway.
Back to the drawing board.
We were determined to make it fly!
We decided to set the next launch date for September 1st!

Slices are ERC-1155, and can represent shares in ownership and earnings. Ready to sell NFTs, merch, tickets or anything else and split royalties between the community or sell a slice of the future income.

As the project evolves the contributors can even offer artworks and merch around the project, and explore using blockchain elements further in the project, distribution of royalties, all managed transparently on-chain using Slicer. Archive. Co-management of material, distributing the work to buyers. Much to explore here!

some ideas that came out of our discussion with Jacopo was to think about how we can do some dev work to integrate Slice with "soulbound" Moloch DAO Governance, building on the Moloch framework. This would enable any DAO using DAOHaus and the Moloch smart contracts that collectively creates something and/or offers things for sale to spin up their own slicers for distributing royalties and earnings transparently on blockchain. For Art DAOs, StoreDAOs, other. Let's build it!

- Ownership of 1000000 Slices (60%) transferred to the project's multisig, to be distributed amongst participants/collaborators

- Filippos, the artist /proposer of the project has been minted 670000 Slices (40%) to his address

## Launch Day! - September 1st

The big morning after so much preparation.
We gathered at the new launch site
This time we were more prepared, had designed the technical aspects better. Had evolved the artistic aspects of the performance further too.
Nothing can replace experience.
Even with one flight attempt under our belts, we felt like veterans.
The weather was perfect. Blue skies.
Everything went as planned.

Inflated the weather Balloon. Installed the systems. APRs radio system to track the path, altitude and temperature. Antenna. Mobile phone with GPS system. Go Pro Camera.
Did some final checks.
Filippos tied his hair to the payload of the balloon.
Take our positions.
Launch!

Jumped into a car.
Followed the path of the balloon from the ground using our systems as it soared up to 35000 meters!

We succeeded to see it fall from the sky next to us, as we were speeding down country roads.

Rushed back to our base in Athens with the precious go pro camera in hand to see for the first time what it had recorded!
