# Julie's Fall Bio

* Has been a lluf since spring of her first year
* Is a Sophomore concentrating in Psychology
* Ask her about colors/color psychology
“Although my experience as a LLUF in the physical Learning Lab was short lived, I’ve loved being a part of the community remotely. I appreciate how the work we do forces me out of my comfort zone to learn new, and often difficult but fun, tools and technology.”
...because making is what we do...
## Julie’s Top 3 Things Made:
1. [This Github page](https://github.com/learninglab-dev/the-resources/blob/master/data/resources/people/julie-t/final-writing-mission.md) compiling the Spring 2020 Final Writing Mission.
* This was SO fun because I got to learn more about my fellow LLUFs, most of whom I haven’t met in person yet. It was super inspiring to read different perspectives and experiences, and it reminded me just how cool, talented, and creative my peers are. Although this was mostly copy and pasting, I did a bit of editing and playing with font sizes in github. It was also good practice for inserting images and videos onto github, as well as learning how to make a table of contents which I thought was super fun.
2. [This Google Doc](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1WKPBAgcxR8uUw6nrqVaadnqZfSz2Lkroon4hzKw23Jo/edit?usp=sharing) comparing Slack and Canvas when we were looking at when/why to use different platforms.
* I had a lot of fun writing this. I love analyzing style choices; it’s so cool to link feelings to fonts, colors, and more. I dove DEEP into color psychology and was thrilled when Jordan shared all the resources from color week (bummed I wasn’t a LLUF then). It felt like I was writing a review and it was fun giving advice on which platform to use in different situations. I love researching anything that has to do with psych or neuro so I had a ball making this.
3. [This Spark page tutorial](https://spark.adobe.com/page/ox1pz99bnGcQB/) on making a moving graph.
* This was for Unboxing Vox and was my first big remote project. This was my first experience with Photoshop and Illustrator, and it was difficult but extremely rewarding. It was also fun to design a fun spark page. The whole process took me a long time because I had to look up so many resources to help, but I’m really proud that I finished it. The final graph itself really wasn’t that show stopping, but it was a great learning experience and strengthened my confidence that I can learn anything I want so long as I devote time and focus to it. I see this project as the starting point of my LLUF career in terms of creating resources, and I’m excited to see if my resources get better and better through the years.
## Julie’s Goals
I’d love to expand my knowledge of Adobe apps, mainly Photoshop and Illustrator. I’m definitely not an expert, but I enjoy playing around with them and would love to learn as much as I can. I think being adept at these is super useful because you can use them for so many different things.
I’ve never worked with garageband, but music/sound intrigues me so much. I think it would be fun to get a little experience with it if the opportunity arises. Mixing songs/sounds or creating podcasts is crazy cool to me.
I’d also really like to continue working with coding, especially making websites with html and css. These are skills that I think are super useful in so many settings, and I can see myself needing to make websites for future jobs. I’d love to learn more so I can create resources for others as well. PS: Sophie Bauder is my inspiration:)
I’m excited to use the camera and tripod more too!! I feel so fancy with a real camera.
I genuinely would enjoy learning anything and everything. I aspire to have a wide range of skills, or at least get a taste of a wide range, and then I’d focus on something I really enjoy once I dip my toes in the water of a bunch of different things.
Although if I had to give a top choice right now, I would choose coding for the web because getting practice with this is important to me.
As a whole, the LL will be concentrating on areas that our clients (faculty and their courses) perceive as crucially important. This year, these are some of the major points of emphasis:
the remote classroom:
Zoom, Slack, Canvas, and media production activities that capture and share physical performance and art/visual making tasks with smartphones and webcams . . . the basics: done well, stretched, and augmented. YOU WILL ALL NEED TO PRACTICE THESE TOOLS AND HELP US PROTOTYPE STUDENT ACTIVITIES WITH THEM.
## Additionally, Julie will level up her skills in:
* coding for the web
* podcasts and sound design
* infographics, datavis, posters, and other graphic design
* 2D and 3D animation
## Julie’s toolkit:
* Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator
* MD, HTML, CSS, Python
* GarageBand
* Blender
## Julie’s working plan:
Definitely includes..
* designLabs + designLab emptyDocs
* prototypes & proofs of concept
* show your work
* elements for the yearbook committee
* individual check ins
Potentially includes...
* project proposals + learning roadmaps
* pop-up pods
* research and dream + moonshot working group
* website/blog for cool psychology findings + motivational quotes?? this needs more brainstorming.
* resources
* open studios
## WHERE:
slack
* #ll-uf-julie-t
* your lovingly crafted individual channel where we will set up regular check ins and communicate about your work.
* #ll-undergraduate-fellows.
* This is your cohort channel where we will communicate about all things lluf.
* #ll-virtual-studio.
* Think the main studio in the brick and mortar space-but in virtual magical space. This is where all the action happens, this is where all of our work in progress is visible constantly. Let us know you’re “in” when you're around for your shift by slacking us what you are going to work on that day.
* #ll-show-your-work.
* The place to share all of your work and see what others have made.
## What learning means...
For me, learning means approaching everything with an open mind and being curious about the hows and whys of everything. It often involves breaking out of your comfort zone to challenge yourself to do something you've never done before. It requires you to embrace failure and then learn from your previous mistakes. Learning is a lifelong process, there's always something you can learn from or about others or yourself. Learning can be frustrating and difficult, it can be silly and fun, it can be refreshing and exciting, but I think it always ends up with you a step ahead of where you were yesterday.
## 3 favorite courses she’s taken at Harvard and why:
**1. Intro to Psychology/PSY 1:**
Despite being a lecture, this class was super engaging because the material was so interesting and sometimes we could do brief experiments as a class to show a psychological theory. What we learned is applicable to every person, and the professors in both semesters are extremely passionate about what they’re teaching which in turn made me excited to learn the material.
**2. Social Psychology/PSY 15:**
This class dove deeper into human behavior/interaction. Prof. Fiery Cushman was energetic, and like the PSY 1 profs, his passion made the class engaging and exciting. The final project was to design your own experiment to test a theory or hypothesis. It was fun to create a Qualtrics survey and analyze the data, despite my results being insignificant!
**3. Habits, Rituals, and Living the Good Life (FR Seminar):**
This seminar was intriguing and exciting because we got to read a lot of primary sources, many written by the prof himself, Michael Norton, who is also a prof at the Harvard business school. We learned about why we have habits and rituals and their importance to wellbeing. Professor Norton’s calm personality made the class have a super relaxed atmosphere, but his curiosity and knack for thinking of probing questions made us all think deeply about the material.
