# Sophie's Fall Bio * Has been a lluf since spring of her first year! * Is a Senior concentrating in History & Literature, with a secondary in Government and citation in Mandarin Chinese! * Ask her about codeLab, reactLab, and Friday morning coffee talks! ## Sophie’s top 3 things made. * https://github.com/learninglab-dev/ll_secondReactTutorial * https://github.com/learninglab-dev/the-resources/blob/master/data/resources/people/sophie-b/index.html (inspired by https://github.com/learninglab-dev/the-resources/blob/master/data/resources/people/sophie-b/storyLab-codeLab.md) * http://show.learninglab.xyz/work/three-peas/GIF-showcase I chose these three projects for my Top 3 Things Made because they represent my primary interest at the LL: learning how to code, as well as how best to teach coding. I’m so excited about where I’ve come in my past two years as a LLUF, and can’t wait to see where I go next, as I hope to pursue skills like data visualization and web/UX design even more in the next year as a LLUF. ## Sophie’s goals. My summer job gave me the opportunity to experiment more with graphic design and the Adobe suite, which I would love to apply this year as a LLUF to building skills in design platforms like Figma, as we began to explore this summer with research related to pudding.cool. This goal stems from my interest in pursuing UX/UI design and data visualization in my professional life, because I believe that the fields I may enter after college (politics, education, museum outreach, etc.) would benefit greatly from these technological skills, as they allow for expanded access and stronger communication. ### additionally, Sophie will level up her skills in: * coding for the web * video shorts (things that go to Vox, YouTube, even TikTok) * infographics, datavis, posters, and other graphic design ## Sophie’s toolkit: * Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator * React * HTML/CSS/Js ## Sophie’s working plan. At the Learning Lab our goal is to figure out what needs to be made, to make the thing, then to share the thing (and the process of making) with the community. So plan, make, share. ### WHAT. Definitely includes: * designLabs + designLab emptyDocs. * prototypes & proofs of concept. * show your work. * elements for the yearbook committee. * individual check ins. Potentially includes: * project proposals + learning roadmaps. * For spring: turning thesis into a pudding.cool website * For fall, make a catalog of all the elements of the pudding pages. What does “having the pudding toolkit” mean? Code, data storytelling, maps, scrollytelling, d3. Then let’s pick off a couple to pick off in the spring! * A data storytelling toolkit! * pop-up pods. * research and dream + moonshot working group. Bring in more quant stuff into qual theses * resources. * open studios. ### WHERE: slack * #ll-uf-sophie-b. * your lovingly crafted individual channel where we will set up regular check ins and communicate about your work. EVERYTHING you plan/make/share will be collected here. * #ll-undergraduate-fellows. * This is your cohort channel where we will communicate about all things lluf. * #ll-virtual-studio. * Think the main studio in the brick and mortar space-but in virtual magical space. This is where all the action happens, this is where all of our work in progress is visible constantly. Let us know you’re “in” when you're around for your shift by slacking us what you are going to work on that day. No filter! * #ll-show-your-work. * The virtual gallery of the LL, everything put here will automatically go up on the web for all to enjoy & learn from! ## Sophie’s community. As a senior, the other primary reason I want to remain at the LL this fall is that I want to stay as connected as possible to its community. This summer and spring, the group of LLUFs and staff that have been available over Slack and Zoom eased the stress of switching to online learning, and provided ample opportunity to stay in touch with friends and mentors from afar. This fall, I want to help continue that trend as a LLUF, and find new ways to build community: for example, I loved the Happy Hour Zoom this spring where we all baked and hung out together; I also think we should look for ways to replicate the iconic coffee connection of typical on-site LL mornings, perhaps by holding special Zooms early in the day where LLUFs and staff can call in with their favorite mugs and morning drinks; we could also try holding board game Happy Hours where attendees can connect over online games like skribble.io. In addition to all of these ideas, just the experience of being in the same Slack rooms or Zoom meetings with LL friends (whether focused on work or play) has consistently brightened my quarantine experience—something I want to continue in the last two semesters I can spend as a LLUF. What “learning” means: To me, “learning” is the lifelong process of acquiring new information, picking up new skills, trying new experiences, and expanding your worldview. I feel so fortunate to work at a place where learning and improving learning in all its forms is the central goal!! ### 3 favorite courses she’s taken at Harvard and why: 1. The Art and Craft of Acting with Remo Airaldi This freshman seminar was one of my first classes at Harvard, and is without a doubt one of my favorites because it not only pushed me outside of my comfort zone as a performer, but introduced me to a community of artists in my grade I remain close with to this day. 2. Inequality and American Democracy with Theda Skocpol This class totally changed the way I view the United States, and the way I understand politics here, by equipping me with information about how economic inequality affects and is borne from so many different facets of life in the U.S. I wish everyone in the country could take this course! 3. The Empire Writes Back: Contemporary Fiction and the Booker Prize with Duncan White Not only did this class introduce me to the author on whose books I am now writing my thesis, but it gave me the chance to read so many incredible books while reflecting on how the world of fiction and fiction prizes is impacted by the lasting effects of colonialism and imperialism. ### 3 games she will play with you: 1. The NYTimes Mini Crossword 2. Trivial Pursuit 3. Pictionary (Skribble.io) ### 3 things she could debate you on (x>y): 1. Vodka Sauce > Alfredo Sauce 2. Money Heist > almost any other Netflix original 3. Google Drive > Microsoft OneDrive ### 3 favorite foods to make (or just eat!): 1. Caprese Sandwich with Basil, Arugula, Tomatoes, Pesto, & Mozz 2. Homemade Baked Ziti (from scratch!) 3. Dal Makhani ### Favorite kind of pet and why: Cats, because of their low maintenance, cuteness, & compelling personalities. ### Totally optional gatherings (aka community building time): * bake together. JK and others will host a monthly bake together time. You can bake along if you want, make your own noms, or just come and hang out for some wholesome vibes. * game night. We will gather once a month to play and think collaboratively or competitively! * “book” club. We will meet once a month to discuss a common reading or piece of media.
