## Starlink RV Price Increase All You Need To Know The desire to get away from it all without losing access to Slack and Instagram was a #vanlife trend long before the coronavirus outbreak. The pandemic has accelerated it, driven by social distancing rules, office closures, and flexible remote working policies that enable more people to set up shop from wherever they choose. However, few do, because change is hard, and truly getting away often means being out of range of cell towers — but not satellites. This is where Starlink RV comes in. ![Uploading file..._j7pl1cmqx]() ## Starlink Roam – Starlink RV Starlink Roam, or Mobile, formerly known as [Starlink RV price](https://medium.com/@jamesrhys46/starlink-rv-price-increase-all-you-need-to-know-d720897c29cahttps://), is a portable satellite internet service for RVers and overland travelers. The Standard Starlink Roam plan is designed for mobile use in any destination where Starlink has active coverage. For residential Starlink service, there is still a waiting list in many areas as coverage is still expanding. However, for Starlink Roam, you don't have to wait to order it, even if you don't live in the coverage area. Since Starlink Roam is a mobile service that you can use on the road, you can order it and have it shipped to you almost anywhere. You can check this map on the Starlink website to see the availability of housing units. ## Types of Starlink mobile phone service Starlink Mobile is a ground service touted as best for RVers, campers, and nomads, and comes with the lowest service priority, meaning your priorities may drop in crowded areas. Mobile users have the lowest level of priority, falling into all the other categories: priority, mobile priority, and standard. ![](https://hackmd.io/_uploads/S1ozFgaR3.png) Mobile has regional and global plans available. Regional is for within your continent, and International is for if you travel outside of your home continent. Starlink regional plans allow US users to use their Starlink anywhere in the United States, Mexico, and some Central American countries. Starlink Mobile Priority is a priority service touted as best for maritime, emergency response and mobile businesses. This plan has priority service at different data tiers and can be used on the go and in the ocean as well. The mobile phone has a higher priority than regular users, and falls directly below it in terms of priorities. View this PDF for a high-level overview of the different plans and pricing information. ## How much does Starlink RV internet cost? ### Moving: * $599 one-time hardware fee * Regional plan $150 or * The global plan is $250 Note: You can pause and unpause regional and global mobile plans at any time. You will be charged for a full month of service when you unpause. This feature is great for snowbirds or part-time RVers. ## Mobile priority: * $2,500 one-time hardware fee * Priority service for $250 per month and 50GB * $500/month priority service for 1TB * $5,000/month priority service with 5TB ## Pros and Cons of Starlink for RVers ### Positives: Providing Internet service in very remote areas Starlink Mobile plans are competitively priced month-to-month It can be paused and unpaused for Mobile Regional and Mobile Global as needed They are constantly launching rockets with new satellites to increase global coverage ### cons: Starlink Mobile has the lowest priority which can result in very poor internet speeds in certain areas or at certain times of the day. Starlink Mobile Priority can get expensive depending on your data needs They are constantly changing plans, prices, and service levels * SpaceX says the rectangular dish consumes an average of 48-74 watts, or 20 watts when idle. I think it might be better, having noticed it jumping between 33-62 watts with an average draw closer to 42 watts when connected to a portable jackery battery with a built-in power meter. Power comes at a higher price for RV owners, so it's good to see SpaceX making regular improvements here. * The Wi-Fi router supports 802.11a/b/g/n/ac on dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz. An IP54 rating makes it splash and rain resistant, but it is intended for indoor use only. Your campsite can easily cover at least a hundred feet in each direction if you're willing to share your service with others (or charge for it). However, there's no Ethernet port, so you'll need to buy an adapter from SpaceX for that. * I often forgot to press the "Stow" button in the Starlink app (under Settings) before disconnecting power from the router in my rush to get on the road again. Fortunately, you can still put the dish in storage mode by removing the stand, placing Mr. McFlatface's face on a flat dish, and plugging the power back in. The dish folds down after a few seconds, which is much better than waiting several seconds or minutes for the storage button to appear again in the app after reconnecting to satellite service. It doesn't lie completely flat in storage mode, but it is flat enough to make it easy to store in car cavities. * Although Starlink RV upload speeds can be slow compared to fixed internet or powerful mobile data connections, content creators who need to upload large videos from the road can start the process at night and be done by the time they wake up in the morning. This is more convenient than having to search for a café that doesn't mind using slow public Wi-Fi all day. Just be careful not to drain all of your vehicle's power if you're running your Starlink RV overnight. * Using the Starlink RV in a moving vehicle will void the warranty, according to SpaceX. “While our teams are actively working to make Starlink use on moving vehicles possible, Starlink is not yet set up to be used safely in this way,” SpaceX's support page says. That's why you won't (yet) find an RV rack in a Starlink store along with all the other accessories. * The Starlink RV can only be used on the same continent as your registered shipping address – something you should note if you plan to outfit a Unimog overlander with a Starlink RV for your trip to Morocco or Iceland. * Starlink RV's no queue feature is legit. I got mine in less than a week. Some residents have been waiting months for their Starlink kits to arrive. * There is a software setting in the Starlink app that sends additional power to the dish to melt the ice. surprising.
