Minecraft And NFTs

Recently, we've received some feedback from the community inquiring for clarification and more transparency regarding Mojang Studios and Minecraft's position on NFTs (non-fungible tokens) and blockchain.

As we are currently working on updating our Minecraft Usage Guidelines to provide more precise guidelines for new technologies, we wanted to take the chance to let you know that integrations of NFTs with Minecraft are generally not something we will support or allow. Let's take a look!

WHAT IS AN NFT?

An NFT is an individual digital token that is not modified and is usually bought using cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. An NFT can be linked to any kind of digital asset such as an MPEG or GIF but the most popular usage is today with digital art such as JPEGs. An NFT is the token that indicates the owner of the original digital file. However, any digital file can be copied and moved or deleted. NFTs and blockchain have also been associated with speculation, where prices are driven up quickly and, as we've seen, could fall quickly.

How will this affect me?

If you're a player or creator actively involved in buying, selling, or trading of NFTs that use Minecraft (like skins or worlds) We strongly suggest you go through the information below. If you don't then these changes won't impact you.

OUR POLICY ON MINECRAFT AND NFTS

Our Minecraft Usage Guidelines outline how the owner of a server can charge for access and how all players should have the same access to features. These rules are in place to ensure that Minecraft remains an open community that gives everyone access to the same content. NFTs may, however, create exclusion and scarcity models which are not in line with our Guidelines and the purpose and spirit of Minecraft.

To ensure that Minecraft players enjoy a safe and inclusive experience, blockchain technologies are not permitted to be used into our server and client applications. Neither can Minecraft game-specific content, such as skins, worlds persona items, or other mods be incorporated by blockchain technology to create a precious digital asset. These are our reasons.

NFT implementations have been launched by a few companies and can be connected to Minecraft world skin pack and files. Other examples of how NFTs and blockchains could be used with Minecraft include creating Minecraft collectible NFTs, allowing players to earn NFTs through activities performed on servers, or earn Minecraft NFT rewards for activities that are not part of the game.

Each of these uses for NFTs and other Blockchain technologies results in digital ownership that is dependent on scarcity or the exclusion of. This is not in the spirit of Minecraft values of creative inclusion sharing, playing together, and sharing resources. soundz promising NFTs are not inclusive of all members of our community and create a situation of the haves and have-nots. NFTs encourage profiteering and speculative pricing, which we believe is not compatible with long-term happiness and prosperity for our players.

We are also concerned that third-party NFTs may not be reliable and could end up costing players who purchase them. Third-party NFT implementations could also be dependent on blockchain technology. They may need an asset manager who could disappear without notice. There have been instances when NFTs were sold at artificially or fraudulently inflated prices. We recognize the intrinsic value of creating in our game and strive to create a market in which those values are recognized.

To ensure Minecraft players enjoy a secure, inclusive experience blockchain technology isn't allowed to be integrated into our Minecraft client or server applications. They also cannot be used to create NFTs from any game content like skins and worlds, persona items, or other mods. We will be watching closely how blockchain technology develops over time to ensure these principles are not violated and determine if it will allow for more secure experiences or other inclusive and practical gaming applications. We do not plan to implement blockchain technology in Minecraft at this time.

We're hoping to have more to discuss with you in the near future. You can find our guidelines here however, in the meantime, we hope to have more to share with you. Keep an eye on us!
