# Outreachy Engagement Research 2022-23
### **Reference: Full breakdown of website categories at bottom of page**
## **Initial Observations**
(Riaan) CNCF Projects that I notice is CNCF OpenTelemetry, Kubernetes & Jenkins
The mentoring GH page only refers to K8s as an example.
So I thing a few questions we could look at:
- [ ] (Intensive) Eligibility Criteria
- [ ] Partnership Opportunities
- [ ] Project History
- [ ] Statistics
- [ ] Sustainability
***
### (Intensive) Eligibility Criteria
* Very strict eligibility criteria re dates, existing commitments etc. (where LF is lenient by comparison)
* Emphasis on existing/needed skills & experience is well-thought out from the outset; e.g. different skill levels
* Applicants required to provide specific details about systemic bias experienced as an example
* Does Outreachy encounter many issues with applicants meeting eligibility criteria? (pushback, change requests etc.)
### Partnership Opportunities
* What is Outreachy in need of when partnering with CNCF/mentoring?
* (Most likely mentors and projects if I have to guess)
* What considerations would we as CNCF need to factor?
### Project History
* If there is 'x' number of CNCF projects already evolved, how did they get involved?
* What about LF projects?
### Statistics
* **How many CNCF projects are mentoring through Outreachy?**
* This would require:
* some processing of data;
* checking a list of CNCF projects against a list of their projects;
* and locating them.
### Sustainability
* If we bring the mentors and projects, do they have the money for paying them all?

## **Key Insights/Summary**
**Level of detail**
The Outreachy website is very intensive in scope and detail, providing information of dozens of in-depth topics on the nature and content of its programs.
Although valuable, this level of detail might be overwhelming for new/casual visitors to our proposed site/repo layout (not a dealbreaker but we should think about how we want to present everything).
**Persona consideration**
**8.4 'Encourage Collaboration vs. Competition'**
Considered effort to encourage thought for applicants' individual experiences, cultures, predispositions etc.; e.g.
* 'impostor syndrome' and not feeling comfortable to answer questions
* cultures taught to defer to authority figures
* gender biases
*Introducing/supporting mechanisms to address these issues will likely contirbute greatly to both the onboarding and retention of mentees over time.* >enquire
**Projecting Timeframes/Commitment**
* Great 'Expectation for Mentors' outline, broken down by weeks - generally more constructive and actionable than LFX?
**UX**
Like many resources, the site suffers from having a complete lack of visuals that would otherwise make dense layers of text engaging and easier for audiences to grasp key info at a glance (especially for the volume of info!)
**Comparisons with our proposed Mentoring Repo format**
* I think our current Mentee/Mentor/WG/Programs layout is a simple, straightforward structure that offers some benefits to user e.g. direct relevance, compared to the dense content organisation of Outeachy's site. (Legal etc. is low-priority)

# **Website Categories** | Full Breakdown
This can be used as a reference point for us to determine which categories and information would be most relevant/applicable to the type of Mentoring support directory we'd like to create.
This can also inform where we would likely arrange sections in a way that would be conducive to the intended flow of the Mentoring resource in relation to the overall Contributor.io.
I've created a basic key we might use to suggest which topics we use,
and which tentative category some version of them could sit under in our own Repo.
e.g. 'Eligibility' under 'Programs' as a reference.
There's likely a better way to do this, but example as follows for now:
(RM) ReadMe
(ME) Mentee
(OR) Mentor
(WG) Working Group
(PG) Program
(IO) Contributor.io main site
*This approach might also suggest that Mentee/Mentor sections are reserved more for the individuals; their goals, skills needs, FAQs, aspirations etc., whereas anything concerning the Programs or development opportunties themselves will detail more process or data-driven information.*
