# **Panch Badri — The Five Sacred Vishnu Shrines of Garhwal**
Just as the Panch Kedar represents Lord Shiva's five sacred forms in Garhwal, the Panch Badri represents Lord Vishnu's five sacred manifestations. Badrinath is the most famous — but four other ancient temples complete the Panch Badri circuit, each with its own mythology, architecture, and devotional power.
What is Panch Badri?
The five temples of Panch Badri are spread across the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand — all connected to the Badrinath Dham mythology and the Nar-Narayan tradition. Completing the full Panch Badri circuit is considered an extension of the Badrinath pilgrimage.
1. Vishal Badri — Badrinath (3,133 m)
The primary and most famous of the five — see Articles 29–43 for complete coverage. The presiding deity is Lord Badri-Vishal in meditative padmasana form.
2. Adi Badri — The Ancient Temple Complex (1,000 m)
Located 17 km from Karnprayag on the Badrinath highway, Adi Badri is a complex of 14 temples rather than a single shrine — one of the largest and most intact ancient temple clusters in Uttarakhand. The main temple houses a 1-metre-high black stone idol of Lord Vishnu (Adi Narayan) — unusually complete and well-preserved, unlike many ancient Himalayan idols.
The complex is motorable from Karnprayag and makes an excellent half-day stop on the Badrinath journey. Open throughout the year (unlike Badrinath, which closes in winter). The peaceful courtyard and the cluster of small temples make it one of the most atmospheric religious sites in Garhwal.
3. Bhavishya Badri — The Future Abode (2,744 m)
Located at Subain, 17 km from Joshimath in the Niti Valley near Tapovan — Bhavishya Badri (Future Badri) is believed to become the main Badrinath when the current road to Badrinath is blocked by the prophesied collapse of the Nar-Narayan mountains. The temple currently enshrines a Swayambhu (self-manifested) form of Vishnu.
It requires a 6 km trek from Tapovan (2,600 m) through forest and rhododendron. This is a remote, rarely visited shrine with a deeply contemplative atmosphere.
4. Vriddha Badri — The Ancient Lord (1,380 m)
Located at Animath village, 7 km from Joshimath on the Badrinath highway, Vriddha Badri (Old Badri) is where Lord Vishnu is believed to have first appeared in his aged form to bless sage Narada. The temple is the oldest of the five — its architecture and atmosphere speak of great antiquity. Motorable from Joshimath. Open year-round.
5. Yogdhyan Badri — Meditating Lord (1,372 m)
At Pandukeshwar, 25 km from Joshimath on the Badrinath road, Yogdhyan Badri enshrines Lord Vishnu in a deeply meditative (yogdhyan) posture. The temple is connected to King Pandu (father of the Pandavas) who is said to have performed penance here.
Pandukeshwar is motorable; the temple complex also includes a Vaishnava math and garden. In winter, the Badrinath deity's Utsav Murti (festival idol) is kept here rather than Joshimath during the closing ceremony.
How to Plan the Panch Badri Circuit
A dedicated Panch Badri circuit can be planned in 4–5 days from Rishikesh: Day 1: Rishikesh → Adi Badri → Karnprayag Day 2: Karnprayag → Vriddha Badri (Animath) → Joshimath Day 3: Joshimath → Yogdhyan Badri (Pandukeshwar) → Badrinath (Vishal Badri) Day 4: Badrinath → Bhavishya Badri trek → Tapovan (overnight) Day 5: Return to Joshimath → Rishikesh
