# Property owners are targeted as Malaysia addresses illegal gambling
Police in Malaysia said the country's fight against illegal gambling extends to property owners who rent buildings to gambling organizations. The announcement followed social media reports of a surge in illegal online gambling at workplaces in the province of Selangor on Malaysia's west coast.

"We will now take action against everyone involved in illegal gambling, including building owners who previously focused on gang members but abused their business licenses," Criminal Investigation Bureau Director Hujir Mohammed quoted local media The Star as saying on Tuesday.
He added, "We will also find out the cancellation of business licenses of people who colluded with illegal gambling groups and recommend them to local councils."
Institutions such as utility company Tenaga Nacional will be tasked with cutting off electricity from buildings used by gambling organisations, The Star reported.
Malaysia has one licensed casino complex. Operated by Genting Malaysia Bhd, The Resorts World Genting Casino Resort is located on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia.
The property was temporarily closed on March 18 as part of a national effort to contain the novel coronavirus linked to COVID-19 infections. Casino operations at the property resumed on June 19 but were initially limited to Genting Rewards members.
