## **Final Research Project** ### Network visualisation as a tool for indicating power: an analysis of climate positive communities empowering the Biden campaign ##### *by Group 12 / Group 4000: Født I Går (Born Yesterday) :face_with_cowboy_hat:* --- ### **Research question:** > How can network visualisations highlight climate positive groups’ support and empowerment of Joe Biden’s 2020 election campaign? --- ### **Introduction and research rationale** * US election & Joe Bidens campaign * Highlighting user tweeting in relation to Biden * Scope: 15th October to 15th of November (election took place November 3rd) * Main focus: The methodological application of network visualisations for the purpose of indicating empowerment --- ### **Methodology** - Marres (2012): Digital method :arrow_forward: digital devices for the purpose of social research - Venturini et al. (2015): framework for visual analysis of network visualisations - Bruns & Burgess (2011): Hashtag communities and ad hoc publics - Bruno Latour (1984): The translation model :arrow_forward: applied definition of power --- ### **Findings** - initial findings - Basis of empowerment: locting support through correlation, sentiment & rhetoric - Actors of empowerment: locating communities related to the biden campaign ---- ##### **Initial findings** - ###### Queried “trump”, “biden”, “uselection”, “presidentialelection” (nomos dataset, oct 15 - nov 15) - ###### network vizualisation leaned toward more interest in Biden campaign - ###### sample of 50 tweets: IBM NLP showed more support of Biden - ###### continuned: qualitative check showed the same ![](https://i.imgur.com/Si3OPdz.jpg =500x) ---- ##### **Basis of empowerment: locating support** - ###### correlation, sentiment & rhetoric - ###### 7 communities - ###### comparison network (trump query) ![](https://i.imgur.com/e7YYqth.jpg =500x) ---- ##### **Actors of empowerment: locating communities** * ###### Visualizing a social graph - highlighting users * ###### Qualitatively researching the users * ###### Politicians, organisations, environmentalists, climate researchers etc. ![](https://i.imgur.com/W8kcGCO.jpg =425x) --- ### **Research limitations** ---- ### **Limitation #1** - our methodological framework proved to be more suitable for the purpose of showing the usefulness of network visualizations for indications of empowerment, rather than for the purpose of proving actual empowerment ---- ### **Limitation #2** - a lot of data was left out - for the purpose of investigating the use of network visualisations and indications of empowerment, we considered it to be ok - may hinder the visualisation of a more nuanced picture of the election :arrow_forward: would have been important to conclude on the actual impact on the election --- ### **Conclusion** * Visualization network is a great tool for indicating empowerment of actors in a network * Indicates but doesn´t prove * Focused on the methodological application of network visualization --- ### **Thank you for listening** :face_with_cowboy_hat: ![](https://i.imgur.com/AShAcig.gif)
