--- tags: Kyle --- # Cracked ### Theme With hard work, we can have an impact on the world ### Title Cracked ### Character #### Hero: Bill Goal: Save Dinosaurs Crisis: Bill Does Not Know How To Look After Dinosaurs Attitude: Change: Learn To Accept That You Can Only Work With What You Have ### Character Setup Bill is a nerdy, but sensitive and caring 12 year old who loves science; especially biology and genetics. He lives with his parents who indulge his obsession with science, including bringing things home and encouraging him to try amateur science experiments. Bill, like most children, loves animals and hates to see any suffering. ### Rules Bill has a curious mind that can lead him to overstep boundaries. He also tends to go along with his friend Jimmy, even when he knows it’s wrong. ## Plot ### Scene 1: [0 0 0] → [1 0 0] Bill is a science-obsessed twelve-year-old on a class field trip to a genetics lab. The class is shown around the lab by a scientist while his teacher, Mr. Blyce, offers additional comments. Bill is walking with his friend Jimmy when something catches Bill’s attention-- a glint of light from the other side of the lab. Bill goes over to investigate. He peers through a door and is shocked to see what looks a large egg. A dinosaur egg. ### Scene 2: [1 0 0] → [1 0 0] Another scientist comes over and yells at Bill, telling him he’s not supposed to be there. Mr. Blyce hurries over and escorts Bill to rejoin the rest of the class. Bill tries to tell his teacher about what he saw, but Mr. Blyce says that the scientists have their reasons for being secretive, and he needs to respect those. Bill doesn’t agree but drops the subject for now. The class finishes up the tour and leaves. ### Scene 3: [1 0 0] → [1 1 0] Later that evening, Bill and Jimmy return to the lab at the outskirts of town with their bicycles. They walk around the outside of the lab until they find a window from which they can see the egg. Jimmy says he wants to go in for a closer look. Bill says they shouldn’t, but Jimmy tries the window and finds that it is unlocked. Jimmy opens the window and goes into the lab while Bill stays outside. Jimmy picks up the egg and an alarm sounds. Jimmy leaves with the egg. Bill tells him to put it back, but then they hear shouting and flee with it instead. ### Scene 4: [1 1 0] → [0 2 1] Bill and Jimmy sneak the egg into Bill’s house. They’re in awe, studying the egg from every angle. But then Bill notices that there is a crack on the side of the egg and worries they might have caused it. ### Scene 5: [0 2 1] → [2 2 1] A scared Bill and Jimmy try researching online but can’t find anything that will help them. Bill wonders if the crack on the egg is starting to look bigger. Bill decides they need to tell his parents. Jimmy doesn’t want to, thinking he will get in trouble, but Bill offers to take all the blame. ### Scene 6: [2 2 1] → [0 4 0] Bill goes to his parents and tells them about the dinosaur egg. They think he is joking but come to his room and see that he was telling the truth. When they see how big the crack is, they decide they need to do something and call Mr. Blyce. ### Scene 7:[0 4 0] → [1 2 1] Mr. Blyce comes over and sees the egg. Bill tells him where it came from, and Mr. Blyce calls his friend at the science lab. Bill and Jimmy wait helplessly until a scientist from the lab arrives. The scientist is angry and says there is no point in looking at the egg. Bill cries and says it was his fault, but Mr. Blyce says that isn’t true. ### Scene 8: [1 2 1] → [1 1 1] The angry scientist says he will be taking the cracked egg back to the lab and then contacting the police. Mr. Blyce talks to the scientist, telling him the kids were just curious about science. The scientist finally calms down and agrees to let Bill and Jimmy come back to the lab to see how the egg was created. ### Scene 9: [1 1 1] → [3 0 3] Bill, Jimmy, and Mr. Blyce accompany the scientist back to the lab and are given a more thorough tour this time. The scientist explains how they have been trying to create dinosaurs from recovered genetic material from prehistoric times, but that it is a difficult process and they have a long ways to go. The egg was in fact already cracked when it was created, and while the boys certainly did not help things, there was nothing anyone could have done to save it. The scientists still don’t fully understand how to create a healthy egg that can withstand the growth of a dinosaur. Bill resolves to do better next time and make sure that the eggs are created healthy. Jimmy says if there is anyone who can figure this out, it is his friend Bill. ### Scene 10: [3 0 3] → [1 0 4] Bill goes home and studies harder than ever before. Years pass, and in his free time he works a summer job at the lab. ### Scene 11: [1 0 4] → [2 0 2] Bill graduates from university. Jimmy cheers him on. ### Scene 12: [2 0 2] → [4 0 3] Bill returns to the old lab as a scientist himself and gets to work. ### Scene 13: [4 0 3] → [3 1 3] Bill leads Mr. Blyce’s new group of students on a tour around the lab. He tells them that science is a slow process, and can be heartbreaking and scary sometimes, but any one person can make a difference if they work hard enough-- even though it isn’t always easy. He then shows the students several large, colorful dinosaur eggs. One of them begins to shake.
