The North Korean women's table tennis team defeated Chinese Taipei 3-2 in the first match of the women's table tennis team event Group C at the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games at the Archer Canal Sports Park Gymnasium in Hangzhou, China, on Feb. 22.

North Korea returned to international competition at the Hangzhou Asian Games after not competing since the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games World Team Qualification in Portugal in January 2020.

North Korea won 3-2 (11-8 5-11 11-9 7-11 11-6) over Jeon Zu Yeow (48) in the first singles and 3-0 (11-3 11-8 11-8) over Lee Yeow Jun (57) in the third singles.

However, the score was balanced in the second and fourth singles, with Byun Song-kyung losing 1-3 (11-9 9-11 4-11 4-11) to Zheng Yijing (14th) and Kim Geum-young losing 0-3 (7-11 2-11 3-11).

North Korea will play its final group match against the Maldives at 11 a.m. on Nov. 23. If North Korea wins that match, it will likely finish first in Group C and advance to the quarterfinals.

They will have to wait until the final to meet South Korea, who have secured the top spot in Group D.
