# NBA to fine up to $1.3 billion for unauthorized absences of All-Star players

The National Basketball Association's (NBA) Office of the Commissioner will strictly monitor the absences of each team's starting players in order to manage their health and conditioning.

The NBA's 82-game regular season has been controversial for its use of resting players for health and conditioning purposes.

Especially when a team has a back-to-back schedule, it's not uncommon for a star player to be benched on the second night of a game for fitness or injury prevention.

The problem with this, however, is that fans who pay big bucks to see a game are disappointed by a player's absence due to a non-injury, and the quality of the game suffers when a national TV broadcast is scheduled.

According to ESPN, the league office will investigate when a player who has been named an All-Star or a member of the league's top five All-NBA teams in the last three years misses time without a clear reason, such as injury.
