**NEWS AUGUST 2022**
:::
**-New 2DECOMP&FFT Github**
A new release of the 2decomp&FFT library has been released which support NVIDIA GPUs offloading as well as a back end for CUDA FFT to perform FFT Fast Fourier Transform on the GPU (https://github.com/xcompact3d/2decomp-fft). The decoupling of 2decomp&FFT from the main branch of the Xcompact3d will help in increasing the impact since the library is used by several codes to perform 2D decomposition. For example the code CaNS is already using the new release of the library linking directly to the newly created repository (https://github.com/CaNS-World/CaNS/tree/main/dependencies).

**-N8 CIR Retreat**
The N8 Centre of Excellence in Computationally Intensive Research (N8 CIR) has been given some funds by EPSRC to bring together some soft/professional skills training for digital research infrastructure professionals. The programme will take the form of a five-day retreat, similar to the virtual residencies that have been held at the University of Oklahoma since 2015. The goal is to develop the soft-skills specifically associated with operating at the interface between researchers and technology.
More information about the event: https://n8cir.org.uk/news/dri-retreat/

**-Hackathon Xcompact3d Jan 2022**
The Xcompact3d team of developers participated in a hackathon jointly organised by SFTC Daresbury and Nvidia. The hackathon was an opportunity to test a mini-app called x3div to investigate the potential of the Fortran command "do concurrent" for replacing directives for accelerated computing. Investigations are still on-going but it was possible to run a "do concurrent" version of x3div on Nvidia GPUs. The next steps will focus on improving the performance of x3div on GPUs as well as testing it with Intel/GNU Fortran compilers on multiple CPUs.
**-LIFD John Fox Annual Lecture**
Dr Sylvain Laizet will be delivering the keynote talk at the LIFD John Fox Annual Lecture in Leeds. The event will focus on active flow control solutions for wall-bounded flows, free-shear flows and wind turbines. The LIFD John Fox Annual Lecture is kindly supported by Dr R V Ahilan (ABL Group) and is organised by the Leeds Institute for Fluid Dynamics.

**NEWS DECEMBER 2021**
:::
**-Virtuak Kick-off meeting**
The kick-off meeting for the project was held virtually on Monday 13th December 2021 with nearly 50 participants, with representatives from Intel, Nvidia & 3 cross-cutting ExCALIBUR projects. The meeting started with an overview of the project with its objectives and presentation of our four flow solvers Xcompact3d, OpenSBLI, uDALES and SENGA+. Then the Domain Specific Language (DLS) framework OPS and the 2DECOMP&FFT library were introduced to the participant. Following this presentations, the three cross-cutting projects involved in "turbulence at the exascale" were briefly introduced by their knowledge exchange coordinator (one project is about UQ, on project is about DLS and one project is about coupling methods). The meeting was ended by a general discussion.
