# Parenting Styles 101
[Parenting styles](https:///i-ville.com/different-parenting-styles-are-you-doing-it-right/) are attitudes, behaviours, and parenting methods that we communicate to our children in patterns or constellations. They're also the emotional environment in which we express our feelings for them.
A clinical and developmental psychologist named Diana Baumrind described three parenting styles in the 1960s: authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive parenting. These parenting typologies were created based on four factors that Baumrind discovered to be important in achieving good parenting during her research: responsiveness, unresponsiveness, demandingness, and undemandingness.
The degree to which parents respond to their children's needs in a supportive and unquestioning manner is referred to as *responsiveness*. Three things are described as *demanding*:parental expectations for their children's behavior (rules and parental supervision); parents' expectations for their children to follow specific rules; if children do not obey the rules, the consequences and their severity are discussed.
