we've all dealt with them. we all have them.
during one particularly rough period of my own making, i met someone who claimed they wanted to help me out of "love". but my–-fortunately brief–-experience with them, short-lived as it was, left me with ptsd and crippling anxiety for a time. i wrote this song, in part, as a way of working through that trauma, accepting it, and coming to terms with it.
the verse is from their perspective. the rest is mine. on the surface, it sounds like a good friend supporting someone they love. but most every line has a second meaning.
take my hand
i know just what you're going through
and all that you try to do
though you feel lost
you're not alone
i'll help you home
let the demons let you be
brother, put your faith in me
and the voices scream so loud
that they're drowning out your heart
tearing you apart
and shadows all around–-
thieves of all your peace
but there's more to life you'll see
i know this hurts
i know you're scared
just listen to my voice
and know i'm always there
i see your soul
the one you hide
screaming from a lack of love
i'll give you some of mine
take your demons set them free
brother put your faith in me
and the voices scream so loud
that they're drowning out your heart
tearing you apart
and shadows all around–-
thieves of all your peace
but there's more to life you'll see
you can't find the peace you're dying for
no matter how hard you try
you won't find the love you're looking for
until you look inside
voices–-once so loud–-
can never drown your heart
there's more to who you are
and shadows, though they try,
can never steal your soul
you're more perfect than you know
