{%hackmd theme-dark %} # Carinae Cryptid starpeople who care so little about the past that they don't remember what corrupted them. ## Physiology Carinae are composed of a raging star-fire held in by an electromagnetic field projected by their core, a largeish, warped chunk of metal that doesn't particularly resemble anything. The core, on top of holding the body together, is also the brain, voice, and senses (minus skin-based senses) of the carina. Deposits of minerals in their "skin" are fairly common. The core can be located anywhere in their body, usually somewhere around the skin, but it's entirely possible for it to be internal with little to no negative effects. They typically have areas of weakness in their skin-field of harmless lightshows called coronas. These are often likened to features of other species which are in similar locations, like hair, wings, or tails, but there's nothing really stopping a corona from forming anywhere else and never being given a particularly fitting name. Carinae typically have a somewhat humanoid form, though they lack facial features of any kind. Additionally, deformity is extremely common, with mishappen, missing, or wrong-bending limbs being the most common. There isn't really any limit to how fucked up an individual carina might look. They can't alter their form at will, but external electromagnetic influence can often interfere with their bodies, with minor effects in the range of changing the shape and location of any coronas they might have, and major effects including warping their body or outright disrupting the field, killing them. ## Origin It goes unrecorded, and oral traditions are vague and vary widely. Records from other species are little help as they entirely consist of finding isolated settlements of carinae that themselves have no apparent link to any others- and such encounters are themselves incredibly rare. The oral traditions typically consist of "we didn't always look like this" and "this wasn't always our name", but no information exists as to what caused the change. ## Culture Utterly uncentralized. Settlements are isolated with no clear point of origin.
