# Languages/Language Rework Simultaneously a document on the lore of the different languages in-universe and a plea to rework things in game to actually match said document. Of note: other languages exist in-universe, it would just be utterly infeasible to implement all of them due to the vast scale of the universe. Some languages are anatomically innate, native to mob type/species rather than mind, and are gained and lost as these are changed. Others are like regular languages in that they can be learned. We really fucking need selectability for languages, like on Bay or whatever. The document below assumes a form of language system where you are limited on the amount of languages you can select for any given character- "free" as noted means that the language in question does not count against whatever that limit is, however it ends up working. ## Languages That There Is Lore For * Buzzwords- Innate ability of buglike stuff to communicate with each other. Lightly spungled. Not technically a language, and it is entirely possible to be unaware that you are capable of communicating in it. Not selectable, innate to moths, rachnids, and bug simplemobs. * Calcic- Ditto, but for skellingtons. We could honestly get away with removing both of these, or reworking/renaming them. Also lightly spungled. Not selectable, innate to phorids and skeletons. * Codespeak- it's just Syndicate codespeak. Obtainable by spawning on Syndicate ships (?). Not selectable (?). * Galactic Common- Conlang developed in collaboration between Teceti, Reh'himl, and Kalixcis during the historical period in which they had bluespace telecommunications but had not developed spaceflight. Common lingua franca for centuries, not uncommon as a first language in locations distanced from those with their own culturally developed languages. Free for everyone to select in character generation regardless of species, and new character slots default to having it selected. * Kalixcian Common- Somewhere between a conlang and a pidgin, of a handful of Kalixcis's most common natural languages. Developed half-naturally, half on-purpose, as said languages happened to blend together easily. It's said in several Kalixcian myths that the power of language was granted to people by the dragons. Necropolis-derived sapients tend to speak this as a result of the ties between Kalixcis and the Necropolis. Selectable, free for sarathi and elzuosa. * Encoded Audio Language- Just some weird robot language. Selectable, either free or innate for IPCs. Can't actually be spoken without a robotic voicebox even if you do know how to. * Proto-Moth Pidgin- I really want to rename this. I almost want to remove it, except that it'd be what tundra moths speak one we add those. A language constructed from what was preserved of the idioglossias used by the original moth "tribes" when moths were first discovered. Typically only known by hobbyists. Selectable, is *not* free for moths (or anyone else). * Nar'sian and Ratvarian- Spungled languages, can be learned in-lore, but I'm iffy on making them selectable for free on character creation at least until we release spungle lore. Can be spontaneously learned without the knowledge of the individual with large enough connection to the force behind the respective cult. * Slime- Biologically innate to slimepeople. Selectable, innate for jellypeople. * Rachnidian- NEEDS renaming. Needs loreing (I'm uncomfortable speaking over existing rachnidstuff loredev). A combination of a sign-language and spoken language. Makes heavy use of the four rachnid backlimbs. Selectable, free for rachnids, cannot be spoken without being rachnid species. * Teceti Unified Standard- Begrudgingly adopted constructed common of North and South Teceti's most common languages. Selectable, free for Kepori. Spoken as a first language on their ring system due to it originating as a project between the two factions. Used as a secondary language on planet. * Vox Pidgin- it's just Vox Pidgin. Same as it is everywhere else. Selectable, free for Vox. ## Weird Shit From tg Stuff in here I have no explanation for, we just kind of inherited it codewise and there's no particular reason to remove them but they also have no real lore relevance. * Aphasia * Beachtongue * Drone * Monkey * Mouse * Shadowtongue * Swarmer * Sylvan * Terrum * Xenomorph ## Remove These Please * Dwarven * Mushroom * Piratespeak- has its niche filled by both Calcic and Codespeak and is thus rendundant. Replace the effect of the pirate hat with a forced pirate accent. * Rylethian ## Add These * Sol Common- Italian, German, and French. Not a blend, but all three of them spoken and used in common conversation. Hellish to learn. Selectable, free for humans and moths. * Galactic Sign Language- constructed simultaneously to Galactic Common. Heavily influenced by Rachnidian, functionally being a version of its nonverbal components adapted to only two arms. Selectable, free if deaf and/or mute. (mute quirk when?) ###### tags: `Lore`
