It will be worth it. APPLICATION - **8 You also, be patient.** - **Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.** - "Establish" = στηρίξατε = to make stable, place firmly, set fast, fix; to strengthen, make firm; to render constant, confirm, one's mind (OBU) - Where your heart is, that is where your treasure is (a play on Matthew 6:21) - Established hearts are necessary for the payoff. TRANSITION Not only do we have to put up with the lost, but we are instructed to put up with each other. Look at verse 9. **9 Do not grumble against one another, brothers,** - **so that you may not be judged;** - **behold, the Judge is standing at the door.** ILLUSTRATION - **10 As an example of suffering and patience, brothers, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.** - **11 Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast.** - **You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful.** APPLICATION TRANSITION **12 But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath,** - **but let your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation.** - watch our yeses and nos. - so that you may not fall under condemnation - condemnation = ὑπὸκρίσιν (*hypokrisis*) = 1. an answer .... 2. the acting of a stage-player ... 3. dissimulation [Gal 2:13], hypocrisy (Thayer); orators who depend on their delivery, tone or manner of an animal's cry (LSJ); deceit, condemnation (Strong) **13 Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray.** - suffering = undergo hardship (Strong); to suffer (endure) evils (hardships, troubles) (Thayer); - used frequently of the hardships of military service (Thayer) - off the Lord of Hosts (Armies, CSB). - 2 Timothy 2:3, Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. - 2 Timothy 4:5, As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. **Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise.** **14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.** - Call for the elders - Elders are instructed to ... - ... pray over the person - ... anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord - "anointing" This is an AORIST ACTIVE PARTICIPLE. The word aleiphō is not the common word for ceremonial, religious anointing (chriō or chrisma), but it is the common term for rubbing on medicine. Physical touching is always emotionally significant to the sick. This may have been a culturally expected act like Mark 6:13; 7:33; 8:23; John 9:6,11.(Utley) - **15 And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up.** - prayer of faith (from the elders, sick or both?) - faith and still sick? then what. - "save" = to save from peril, injury or suffering (Mt 8:25, Mk 13:20, Lk 23:35)...; of healing, restoring to health: (Mt 9:22, Mk 5:34); In NT, especially of salvation from spiritual disease and death, in which sense it is "spoken of in Scripture as either (1) past, (2) present, or (3) future, according as redemption, grace, or glory is the point in view. - **15b And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.** - 1 Corinthins 11:27-30 Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. 28 Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself. 30 That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died. - **16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed.** - Power of Confession - against a brother, a group or the church. - God power and effected. - Darren C. Illustration > powerful - **The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.** - "as it is working" = - God, through the gospel, is what makes us rightoeus ILLUSTRATION **17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. 18 Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit.** - "a nature like ours" = ὁμοιοπαθής = **suffering with like passions (OBU); [or] affected in the same way** (LSJ); (cf. Strong, Thayer) - Holding back fleshly emotions is a type of suffering, unique to the Christian. - We fight battles with our old self. APPLICATION TRANSITION **19 My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, 20 let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.** - "Wanders from the truth" - "save his soul from death" - soul = = - "and will cover a multitude of sins" - Sins not only cause death in our lives but ... - Sins dishonor God - Sins are very contagious - We align ourselves with the wrong kingdom ILLUSTRATION CONCLUSION

### Bibliography and Works Cited - NOTE: Please [click here](https://insidecrosspoint.org/sermons/2022/oct/bibliography.html) to access the web-page for all of the works cited–save those below under the “Other Works Cited” (if any).
