Epic Games Store "definitely Won't" Restrict Games with NFTs

Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney says that Epic Games will not limit the distribution or sale of games that incorporate NFTs. Sweeney's statement follows a statement from Minecraft developer Mojang, which outlined the company's stance to not allow blockchain technology or NFTs in Minecraft.

After Mojang's announcement, a fan contacted Sweeney on Twitter to enquire whether Epic Games would take a similar stance, however Sweeney responded in the negative.

He believes that developers should be able to decide how to build their games and that you can decide whether or not you want to play them. another forum "I believe that stores and operating system developers shouldn't interfere by forcing their ideas on other people. We certainly won't."

Another user reacted to Sweeney's comments asking what the difference is from the Epic Games policy that prohibits hateful and discriminatory content. Sweeney stated that this was due to "editorial and branding judgements" and that Epic has decided to "draw the line at acceptable norms for mainstream media."

Some users on the PC gaming subreddit have taken issue with Sweeney's stance, highlighting how the Epic CEO has previously voiced his opinion against NFTs. Sweeney published publicly a copy of his September 2021 email response in a tweet reply. It stated that "We aren’t touching NFTs because the entire field is involved in an uncontrollable mix of scams , interesting decentralised tech foundations and scams."

Sweeney now says that he believes that Epic Game store developers should be able to pursue such integrations however, he isn't in any way ambiguous about. In a follow-up tweet, Sweney stated that Cryptography is a complex field.
