### What's a (good) Impact Case Study worth?
* For *unit of assessment 11* (CS Department), UoL received
£92,472 in QR funding for 2023/24 alone for our REF2021 impact cases.
* 4* Impact Cases are are worth 4 times the funding of 3* Impact Cases.
* We had $\frac12$ 4* cases and $\frac32$ 3* cases (half marks ...)
* **$\to$ <span style="color: #f55;">a 4\* case is worth £105,682, a 3\* case £26,420.**</span>
---
### Rules of REF2029 Engagement and Impact Element
* We will need <span style="color: #f55;">5 **Impact Case Studies**</span>
* details next slide
* **impact must already (provably) have happened!**
* (relatively) substantial projects
* And an <span style="color: #f55;">**Impact Narrative**</span> statement
* details to be announced ...
* can likely mention many efforts with *impact potential*
not only

## 2. Updates
* Danushka (remote)
* Katie
* Vitaliy
* Phil
* Mario
* Sebastian
---
### Sebastian: Powersort in Python [1]
Research:
* a new sorting algorithm (papers at ESA2018 and ALENEX2023)
* slightly faster on pre-sorted data
* provable guarantees
Impact:
* used in default list sort in CPython and PyPy
* potentially more frameworks
* speeds up sorting by ~0.5%
---
### Sebastian: Powersort in Python [2]
What's happening?
* collecting evidence
* competition
---
## 3. Group Work
---
### Part 1: Impact-Case Candidates
In your groups around one of the presented candidates, try to answer the following questions collectively.
1. *What has changed / is likely to change* because of the underpinning research?
2. What type(s) of impact is that?
3. Who is affected by this change?
4. What specific paper(s) form the underpinning research?
5. How could the change be evidenced? Both qualitative and quantitative evidence is useful.
6. What further steps could help to strengthen this impact narrative?
<span style="color: #f55;">**The presenter should only answer to questions from the group,
but not lead the discussion!**</span>
---
### Part 2: Brainstorm Culture
Pair up with a neighbor in the room.
1. Explain your research interest to your partner as in an elevator pitch (2min).
2. From the list of possible *impact categories*, discuss together which impact is most likely for your research. (3min)
Write that down.
Do the same with swapped roles.
