###### tags: `brainstorming` # Battery Management ## Storage Storage on ship should be: * waterproof (splash water) * outside * contain a fire * in sight of the crew * in a fire resistant place We can't seal the box completely because of the developing gases and expension of the gases due to the fire. Easy disposal of the battery in the sea might be another requirement. ### Off the shelf solutions * [BAT-SAFE LiPo Sicherheitskoffer](https://www.hoelleinshop.com/lipo-zubehoer-bat-safe.htm?shop=hoellein&SessionId=&a=article&ProdNr=SFBAT-SAFE&t=49302&c=67202&p=67202) * [LiPo bag](https://www.rc-race-shop.de/racemob/vplipobagc-lipo-safebag-185x75x60mm?c=1714) * [Ammunition box](https://www.modellbau-jung.de/Akkus-Batterien/Liposchutztaschen/Munitionskiste-LIPOschutzkiste-Wasserdicht-Klein.htm?SessionId=&a=article&ProdNr=MJ-MUN1&p=87) * DIY: * fill with sand or [Feuerlöschgranulat](https://www.modellbau-jung.de/Akkus-Batterien/Liposchutztaschen/FIREBALLS-Brandschutz-Feuerloeschgranulat-fuer-Lithium-Akkus-1-Liter.htm?SessionId=&a=article&ProdNr=PE-X3361&p=87&rdeocl=1&rdetpl=productpage&rdebox=box1) * drill holes in lid * remove sealing ### Custom soltions The charging could be integrated in the [aluminium storage box](https://www.alu-box.de/profi-box-140-liter--88.htmln) of the the planes. The charger along with a LiPo safe/bag or "Feuerlöschgranulat" could be integrated into a splash waterproof box such as an [outdoor case](https://www.profikoffer.de/B-W-Outdoor-Case-Typ-5000/5000-Y). A [systainer from festool](https://www.festool.de/produkte/systainer-und-transportsysteme/systainer/204841---sys3-m-137) might work too. The 230V power cable could be extended and routed through a "Kabelverschraubung" to the outside. As an additional safety measure we could cover the circuit of the charger in conformal coating. Helps against minimal amount of water ingress and corrosion. ## Charging We currently use the [HTRC LiPo charger](https://www.amazon.com/Battery-Charger-Balance-Discharger-Chargers/dp/B08T69XKBQ). The charger has a 230V connection and can charge from DC too. For charging we need: * 230V or DC power * max. power draw is approximately 200W * undisrupted/continous power * 1 1/2 h of time Requirements for storage apply here too. If the battery remains in the plane and download of image data should happen in parallel the plane/battery should stay next to the image download station. ### Charging procedure Most likely there will be to options to charge the batteries. The first option is to leave the battery in the plane and charge the battery through the special charging port that is part of the box. The second option is to remove the battery from the plane and charge the battery with a WEIPU (special connector) charge cable. This procedure has the benefit that we can do the charging in a safe space e.g. a LiPo safe.
