How to Get Minecraft Capes

Prior to this, they were only available to Minecon attendees You can now purchase your very exclusive Minecraft capes. Learn how to obtain them in both Minecraft Java and Bedrock

Jen Rothery

Updated: July 11, 20,22

How do you get hold of Minecraft capes, you are asking? There have been rumors, whispers of the mythical piece of cloth that adorns the shoulders of the top Minecraft players. The legends talk of numerous Minecraft capes that were given to the lucky few over the years. The latest news (sigh) is that capes also modify the appearance of Minecraft Elytra, the magical wings found on the end of ships, since they take up the same area on a player's back. Needless to say, Minecraft capes are highly sought-after but haven't been easy to obtain.

Anyone who attended a Minecon event before Minecon Earth 2017 each received Minecraft capes. Each year, a different colour and design. Even rarer still are the personal capes given to people who are lucky for their accomplishments, such as Reddit user u/billyk_, who got a personal turtle cape after he suggested that Mojang should include turtles in Minecraft.

If you're unable to think of a solution that is as good as turtles (unlikely) or travel back to the days of Minecon It appears that you're not able to find any of these Minecraft capes in the Java version. They are more common in the Bedrock version due to the many skin packs available in the Marketplace. If you want them for free, you can try on a cape using the help of Minecraft mods, but it will only be visible to you. There is one currently available Minecraft cape for the Java edition, though it's not available yet, so keep reading for more information on how to get it.

Get a Minecraft cape by migrating your account to Minecraft.

In a blog post published in 2020, Mojang announced that it will be migrating all Minecraft Java edition accounts from Mojang to Microsoft. This is a mandatory change, so if you don't change your account when the time comes then you'll never be allowed to play Minecraft unless you use the launcher.

On the plus side, however when you log into Minecraft using your Microsoft account, you'll unlock a shiny new cape - and possibly more than that, as Mojang suggests that players will receive 'more than one outfit to showcase'. New Minecraft accounts are automatically set up using Microsoft instead of Mojang.

You can learn more about the steps to take by reading this blog post by Mojang.

How to activate Minecraft capes

If you own an official Minecraft cape, you can equip it prior to launching a game. However the capes you have Bedrock capes are only available to the version you have. The same applies to any capes you earn in the Minecraft Java version.

For the Bedrock version, open the app and click the button to open the Dressing Room from the main menu. Then, click the tab to the left with an orange cape and the Mojang logo. This will display all of your available capes So, pick one and click on equip.

To play the Java version, you'll must launch the Launcher and then click Minecraft: Java Edition on the left side of the screen. You will be presented with a range of options which include Skins. Click this link to open all your skins currently available. From here, you can create a new skin or edit an existing one. Under the option to choose a Skin File, you will be able to view all of your available capes.

Make a cape using Minecraft mods

What happens if your avatar requires an outfit and you don't have the money for the free cape of migration? You can make your own cape using mods. You can acquire any of the most sought-after capes in the game or, better yet, any cape you can think of using mods like the Advanced Capes Mod.

There is a caveat: other players you meet on multiplayer Minecraft servers won't be able to see your cape unless they also have the same mods installed. So the only way to have capes that are visible to everyone is to wait for official capes to be gifted to you from Mojang as it migrates your account.

That's everything you need to know about getting yourself an awesome Minecraft cape If you're looking for a cape to complete your ensemble, here are the best Minecraft skins we've found or you can kit yourself out with a complete outfit of Minecraft Netherite armor. Pirateportal.Win Take a look at our Minecraft The Wild guide for everything about the most recent 1.19 update.
