dana boyd article-
Boyd argues that ignorance isn’t “not-yet knowledgeable” (para. 3) but it purposefully manipulates knowledge that we receive and is “strategically manufactured” (para. 3). Ignorance is not oblivion but in fact sometimes knowledge enables ignorance which boyd explains is the “oppression by the powerful” (para. 3). People nowadays receive the majority of information through technology and it has some benefits of educating more people but it has also “systematically tear at the social fabric of public life” (para. 1) causing people to have tension and lose connection with one another in the world. Simply being knowledgeable about a topic doesn’t mean you are well-informed and what you know is correct- like the example of a white nationalist who not only tricked the media and the public making people believe they know the full story but meanwhile it is what the white nationalist wanted them to know manipulating the information ecosystem- the knowledge they know is enabling ignorance in them since they are not informed with the correct story. This action of data void and media spectacle reassures that the information we learn isn’t educating us the right information but is the action of agnotology. Furthermore, on the Internet people ask questions, such as “Are jews people?” not only spread false information and ignorance but raises attention and spotlight to white supremacy which is “agnotology at work” (para. 7). Like boyd mentioned, the rabbit hole of agnotology online especially on Youtube for kids under the age of 25 is crucial because there are thousands of videos that are recommended depending on your searches and if the video has false information that are so convincing then you are now going down this rabbit hole of only trying to find information that reassures your belief rather than finding other source of information that might challenge the idea. Relating to the article written by Kate Moran, “Millennials as digital natives: Myths and realities” people in this generation like to hear someone explain it and walk through a demo which hopefully gives the children the benefit of realizing what’s false and true. Therefore, how are people protecting the information ecosystem so people can make informed decisions rather to avoid agnotology at work?
