# Ayushman Bharat Health Scheme Begins in Delhi; 2.6 Lakh People to Receive Health Cards in First Phase
"The Ayushman Bharat Health Scheme, one of India’s largest government-backed health initiatives, has officially been launched in the national capital, Delhi. In a major push toward universal healthcare, 2.6 lakh people are set to receive Ayushman Bharat health cards in the first phase, granting them access to free treatment worth up to ₹5 lakh per year at empaneled public and private hospitals.

The scheme, also known as Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), targets economically weaker sections, underprivileged families, and vulnerable individuals who often lack access to quality healthcare. With the launch in Delhi, the scheme now covers all major metro cities in India, expanding its footprint significantly.

Each eligible individual will be issued a digital health card, which contains their medical and identity information, making hospital visits more efficient and reducing paperwork. The card allows cashless treatment at empaneled hospitals across India for over 1,500 medical procedures, including surgeries, diagnostics, and follow-up care.

Union Health Ministry officials noted that Delhi’s inclusion in the scheme marks a critical step in achieving equitable healthcare access. Special camps, digital kiosks, and door-to-door outreach will help ensure all eligible residents are enrolled in the coming months.

Local beneficiaries expressed optimism and relief, especially those who previously struggled with high medical costs. Healthcare providers have also welcomed the move, expecting improved patient flow and better health outcomes.
